Description

Hello.

I live near the corner of 55th and Shattuck. I'm writing to ask about unfinished repairs on both streets.

Roughly three weeks ago, crews were out working under the street both on 55th St. and on Shattuck. Several large openings needed to be cut into the pavement. However, now that work has seemingly been completed the streets still have not been repaired. Instead large plates of steel cover the openings in the pavement, with loosely held asphalt adhered.

Being at the crossroads of three bus stops, highway access and downtown Temescal this is an extremely busy intersection with vehicle, bike and pedestrian traffic. The steel sheets are uneven with the road and have sharp edges. When cars drive over they make a loud banging or tire squealing sound. For overall peace and quiet it's an annoyance, but it's particularly a problem at night while trying to sleep. Moreoever, I'm aware of two car tires that have been punctured and one bicyclist fall while driving over the metal plates.

I completely understand (and appreciate) the necessity of repairs and upgrades. It's not my intention to complain about that, but I do take exception to large openings in the pavement being left as is. They're both a public safety issue and a nuisance to residents and pedestrians.

I'm reaching out to the City first because I'm not sure if it is water/sewage, PG&E or other utilities that initiated the work. I'm hoping if it's a City issue, it will be resolved in a timely manner. If not, I'm hoping you can tell me who is responsible so that I may contact them personally as well as have the City file a complaint with the proper agency.

Thanks for your time.
