This is a fatal accident waiting to happen EVERY morning people blow right through the yellow and red and you can not get turned left. With all the teen age drivers going to Oakland Tech. Center there turning left someone is going to get seriously injured or killed by someone running that light. AT LEAST PUT A POLICE OFFICER THERE TO TICKET THESE PEOPLE!
Thank you Mrs. Jefferson Bennett
Many accidents have accrued at this light... What would be really GREAT is if the Kids at the school would turn it into a school project to learn about all the RED TAPE to get some kind of arrow light install
Also you would think the Oakland Tech. Center Administrator’s would take this to the MANY school boards that attend this training facility to protect their students
Well there it is somebody DIED here today! Running the damn yellow/red and punched it right into the path of a Waterford school bus!! Shaving off a few minutes of waiting time at the light ended that persons LIFE!! Had an ARROW been installed the bus wouldn't have been having to turn left on a yellow?red and the person that punched the gas to run the light may have made it through without their stupidity killing them!!!! PUT IN A LIGHT BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE DIES!!!!!!
Fatal accident involving school bus and van Dixie Highway and Big Lake Road in Springfield. Twp. Oakland County.
I reported this to be a problem on Yahoo, report traffic issue site a few months ago... and it was sent to MDOT and the Rd. Commission.... They need a left hand turn arrow on to Big Lake Rd. from north bound Dixie Hwy... I grew up on that corner since 1970 and have seen the problems there, right out the kitchen window.
I also made comment on… Why are “ALL” the School Boards that their kids attend this school are not doing something to fix this accident waiting to happen. That corner is a “ZOO” when school is starting and when they let out with all the teen drivers, and school buses.
Just try and make that turn and get to Nadette Dr. When the ZOO of traffic is in session, there is even a sign saying please do not block intersection and they still block it.
That whole intersection needs to be moved down by the car dealership to get rid of that 90 deg. turn to make it safer… It is just a nightmare. They should have Brooks Patterson and All the School Boards sit there and watch that intersection while the ZOO is in progress…. At “ALL” four times When AM. Classes start and let out and for the PM. classes also…. Just how many have to get hurt or die to address this problem???
I was completely DISGUSTED this morning! After yesterdays fatal accident they had an Oakland County Sheriff sitting at the light this morning. He was on the opposite side of the road facing NORTH and my daughter and I sat in the left turn lane and WATCHED 9 DIFFERENT CARS RUN THE RED LIGHT GOING NORTH BOUND!!! HE JUST SAT THEIR AND DID NOTHING! And he was in a brand spanking new CHALLENGER! THIS is what our tax dollars pay for? A brand new cop car so they can sit on their @#$% to stay warm while people break the law RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM!!!!!
Ok based on the comments will adding a green arrow fix the problem? Or will it be just another accident waiting to happen? It sounds like the problem is people running the red light. Will adding a green arrow just give people the false sense of security? Or will it cause the law breakers running the red light to stop? Remember labeling something an accident waiting to happen is easy, figure out the root cause and changing the drivers habits is much more difficult that just adding a green arrow. If the problem is people running the red light adding a green arrow is just another accident waiting to happen. What makes this location different than any other location where we make a left turn?

Go down there and see it for yourself.......
Before you run your uneducated and ill-informed mouth!!!
While you are at it go talk to all the school bus drivers to give you some information on it.
They live it every school day...
As far as... “Different than any other location where we make a left turn?"
There is a Vocational School with 5 or more “School Districts” going to it…

I have Ken, actually several along with every other accident that I am aware of. I cover about 35,000 miles a year. I have seen many accidents in my travels.

Ken - That wasn't a question. That was a statement. Did the bus driver fail to yield the right of way to the on coming vehicle or did the other vehicle run the red light? (Unless there were witnesses we may never know the truth).
While you are at it go talk to all the school bus drivers to give you some information on it.

Sound like you know Ken so tell me. What is the PROBLEM, not the solution that you want? Are people running the red light? Is there not enough time to make the left turn?

Remember if a solution is put in place that doesn't fix the problem, it will continue to be a problem. If people continue to blatantly run this red light (as I see atleast once a week sometimes more on my drive in to work) accidents will happen. Unfortunately I think what I witness in my 2 minutes that I am in the vicinity of this intersection is probably not all that unusual. I went through a yellow light last week because I didn't think I could safely stop for the intersection in time. A truck that was about 4 to 5 car lengths behind me went through the intersection too. Do you think that the light was red before they even got close to entering the intersection?
I asked many questions because the people reporting this issue should understand the issue and help point to the problem. Adding a left turn arrow is a proposed solution. It may or not fix the problem, especially if the problem is red light running (but it may make the left turners feel safer even though they may not be).
I had said before… I grew up on that corner since 1970… and can see it right out the kitchen window... You will never get people from running yellow/red lights. The best we can hope for is to try and make it a little safer and that arrow with the correct timing on it would help a great deal.
It would be GREAT if you would sit there at the intersection at the start of school and while it lets out to see just how nasty it really is. The rest of the day it is bad enough, but when you throw in the mix of all the school buses and the kids driving is when the odds increase substantially for an accident to accrue at that intersection.

A left turn arrow will be added as part of the traffic signal modernization included in the 2013 Dixie Highway construction project.

Thank God!!! No it may not stop red light runners, which that intersection is so bad for that, a Oakland county sheriff should be there every single morning writing tickets, the revenue from it could be used in a lot of ways and would deter more from running it. With that said, At least the arrow will now allow people to have a chance to get turned without feeling like they have to put their lives on the line to do it. That light is a shooting gallery and it is about time. Thanks for posting the link Ken, that is very good news.
