Need Bicycle lane
To enable cyclists to access the Farmington Canal, shopping centers, and the family neighborhoods in this area, I propose putting in bicycle lanes on Putnam Ave. between Whitney Ave. and Dixwell.

The town of Hamden has painted a bike lane on Putnam ave, as well as place several

Well, this is moving along unbelievably slowly. The latest update I've had is that the Mayor and the Police Chief (who apparently has jurisdiction over road improvements and changes in Hamden) are fully supportive of the bicycle lane. But, oddly enough, nothing is moving forward.
So, everyone, call the Mayor, call the Police Chief and tell them how much you want the bicycle lane!! Tell them it is a priority to the local citizens and remind them that the money is there, the approval is there, and the need is there.
I agree wholeheartedly with the recommendations of Milone & MacBroom; they are spot-on.
I definitely agree with the recommendation to put the parking on the south side of Augur St and the bike lane on the north side. I would discourage 10' auto lanes directly adjacent to curbs and putting the parking on one side and the bike lane on the other solves this issue. I also definitely agree with the recommendation for sharrows in both directions on Putnam Ave between Newhall and Whitney. A 4.5' bike lane adjacent to parking—especially in the downhill direction—is a recipe for dooring. Sharrows will work well here, especially since uphill bike riders have the option of taking Augur.
It is remarkable that M&M sent Azela that letter on the 6th of December. Just 10 days afterward, on the 16th of December, the Federal Highway Administration unveiled the 2009 edition of the national street sign and pavement marking manual, the Manual of Universal Traffic Control Devices. The new edition includes guidelines for shared lane markings, making this bike route even more rock-solid (some municipalities are hesitant to use pavement markings or signs not included in the MUTCD).
This should be a piece of cake for the Town of Hamden Traffic Authority to design and bid out.
I stand corrected, Brian. In fact I couldn't remember the proper acronym for the city department- probably road works. At any rate, I got the details from Azalea, who can fill you in if you're interested. It'd be great if you got involved. Also, you might be interested in the plan for the bike lane, which is on the association website, maybe you want to give some feedback based on your experience: www.whitneyville.org
I don't think you mean the MV Dept. It's possible that the state DOT might be involved, or the State Traffic Commission, but I don't see why they would need to be involved in a matter as routine as this.

Where all Hamden liveable street issues, including bike lanes, are discussed as well.
I just went to the Whitneyville Civic Association meeting. They secured funding as well as approval from the city to put bicycle lanes in! They recently followed up with the city about the lanes, and the MV department had not had any communications about it- so we need to encourage them a bit to get going on it. If you would like to help, please contact Azalea at secretary@whitneyville.org. She will be arranging a meeting about the cycle lanes. And for further information on the cycle lane plans see www.whitneyville.org.
Many thanks, Brian!
Yes! This would be the perfect place for a bike lane.
Hamden city government is receiving email updates on this issue. Hopefully they will act on this excellent suggestion.
