Description
Good Evening, I'm writing to express great concern over the new traffic pattern at the Willow/Summer/West street intersection. I use this intersection multiple times daily and have witness multiple traffic violations and near miss accidents. I've watched people go straight through red lights on West Street, but my greatest concern is the difficulty of moving off Summer Ave. People are now traveling down Willow Street at excessive speeds into the curve since the stop sign has been removed. When stopped at the Summer stop sign, there is no way to see the traffic coming down Willow due to the fencing on the corner property. You literally have to move into the intersection to visualize the cars coming down Willow Street. It is also very difficult to get out of Summer when the traffic is busy. I sat there through 5 light changes before I finally had the opportunity to get across to the lights tonight. The entrance onto Summer is also quite tight. I'm concerned what is going to happen once the winter season hits us as there is absolutely no wiggle room to make that turn. I know many other people in the area have concerns about the safety and design of this intersection. I hope the town will bring this up for discussion and find a solution to improve the traffic flow. Thank you for your attention on this concern.

installed West Street traffic signals, the Town would like to take this opportunity to
update residents and potential commuters. Please note that the new signals are in
an interim condition and are not at their final configuration. Currently, the signals
are on straight-timing cycles which allow each direction of traffic a green light
regardless of whether there is a vehicle present. When the signals become fully
operational cameras will be used to detect vehicles, increasing the efficiency of the
lights and reducing wait times.
Since the West Street project remains under the control of MassDOT, the Town
has not yet accepted the project as complete. The Town continues working
diligently with MassDOT to complete the project and resolve all remaining issues,
including final signal configurations.
Some residents have also expressed concern over the new geometry of the West
St., Willow St. and Summer Ave. intersection. Please be assured that after
numerous traffic studies, analysis, and multiple public meetings, independent
traffic consultants and engineers designed this intersection in the interest of safety
and traffic calming.
The Town understands that with any changes there will always be an adjustment
period. We would like to thank all of you for your patience and concerns.

I also feel like the stop light at West should have some delay before cycling for someone in the right turn lane. Frequently, I come to my complete stop at the red light, there's no one coming on West, so I can just go right on red, but the light has already started to cycle.
