I remember the days when the street cleaners used to go up and down the roads washing and sweeping the streets of our city clean.
Sadly these trucks seem to have disappeared allowing the accumulation of debris from runoff, construction contractor dust and dirt , leaves and everything else that ends up on our streets.
Now we have weeds growing along our curbs and plugged sewer grates.
I notice this isn’t just in my neighbourhood but all over the city streets.
I know the city is trying to save some money these days but in light of the recent flooding I would think surface drainage would be a priority.
It is an eyesore and a hazard to cyclists who are relegated to the drive the curb lanes.

I actually uncovered some of the grates in my neighbourhood myself when I realized I hadn't seen a street sweeper in years, and Environment Canada was warning about more rain. But I don't recommend this for any citizen to try.
If it rains while the sewer grates are covered, the roads will be in a worse way than they have been. A lot of holes have been filled with gravel, but there have been an alarming number of sinkholes and "potholes" developing in the GTA.
