Description

Camper has pitched their tent and belongings on the Mandela Parkway median, south side of 28th Street. Please have homeless services assist them to relocate to an other appropriate location, WHICH THIS IS NOT.

There was also a campfire lit at this site, evident my the still smoldering coals, crackling and heat. While sensitive indeed to the plight I hate to say this is NOT a campground! Our children play in this “public” median and this is CLEARLY a hazard. I’m going to guess that this message will again be hit with a reply that the city has “received this issue” but will again do nothing about it. Please help us help this person!

We’d also like to point out that the campfire “area” is next to a dry and/or dying tree. Basically a matchstick waiting to be lit. With all the winds it’s an accident waiting to happen.

Not only that, this person is me talky ill!! Is extremely aggressive. I saw her punching and hitting another woman from the encampment on 28th and Mandela, later she yelling at the woman that sells the fruit on the corner. This is insane like everything happening in the intersection of Mandela Pkwy and 28th street. This situation makes me hate the city of Oakland. Why don’t we see encampments in the nicest neighborhoods? I bet they call the Major directly and they don’t have to go through 311-Oakland. This is a situation that affects mostly middle class and honest tax payers and obviously the people living in this encampments.

She has also threatened to “beat my dog” if it gets in “her yard”. I said I was “just walking my dog as I always do, in a public area” and she fired back “this is my spot, stay out”. So, City of Oakland, what is going to be done? Nothing I take it. You’ll acknowledge the report and do nothing as always. She clearly needs help, and I wish nothing ill upon her. But…this is not a campground, she is clearly in need of assistance and she is now making threats to passers by.

I saw her beating to the ground an old woman from the tents on 28th. She needs help and we need a break, honestly I am sick of constantly picking up trash, avoiding sidewalks that don’t feel safe, driving around the block for 10mins to find a parking spot because the encampment on 28th and partially the guy from the RV took the entire block. This is infuriating and frustrating and now dangerous.

This encampment has already doubled in size and trash over the weekend. This is a public area used by many. Please please do something before this gets out of hand

Oakland 311 needs to do something asap. This is completely dangerous. Why is it that people who are actually residents here are being forced to drive miles and miles so they can use a park, and we just let anyone come here and take over our parks? Please do something asap. I can't even walk to Bart anymore because of this. This is not a camp area. There are plenty of other places they can camp. This is not the place.

We keep trying, to no avail. My suggestion? Keep calling 510-777-3333 until someone does something. We did, they came but simply shouted something out of the window of their OakPD SUV. They drove away. She then removed a couple items from the tree and went back in her tent. The next day, there was still more stuff piling up and of course the smoldering fire pit.

Please relocate this woman now! She needs to be in a different place!! She is very aggressive. For the last two night she has started fires to grill/warm up but today’s fire is bigger than usual. This is too dangerous, there is a dead Oak tree right next to the fire!! Come on City of Oakland!! Take responsibility for this person and our green public spaces.
