Traffic light for cars heading east on Munson skips a green cycle while traffic heading west on Munson gets a green light. Does not happen regularly and may be triggered when walk signal button is used.

Traffic Light not being obeyed Archived

There is a traffic light here when you turn right onto Goffe from Webster. The sign clearly says "No turn on Red". This makes sense, this is located very near to a local park and elementary school. Yet, many people don't seem to know or care that this is a red light and treat it instead as a stop sign or a yield sign. I have been stopped at this light many times and been honked at by other drivers who want me to run the light, or sometimes they just go around, to the point where I now stick to the right half of the lane even though this is a single lane. The signs need to be made more clear and a police presence needs to be here to discourage those who would violate this traffic light. It's only a matter of time before someone, perhaps a student at the school, gets hurt by a speeding maniac!

Narrowing the travel lane down or installing other types of traffic calming measures, so drivers have to go slowly to make their turns, would increase the visibility of other road users and improve safety.

When people are traveling fast, they have much less time to look and they are also less likely to obey laws like this.

Police enforcement would be helpful, and I wish the NHPD would provide the detailed data requested by the Safe Streets Coalition (including type of violation issued) so that neighborhoods could see what actions were being taken on a regular basis, and where.

However, it's unlikely that a cop can be stationed here 24/7, so I would move for street improvements as well. They don't have to be expensive ones - many other cities use temporary measures for several years until they can find the funding for a permanent installation.

There is no reason for speeds at this intersection to exceed 18 miles per hour.

The traffic signal is relatively new. This intersection used to be a yield, for traffic turning right onto Goffe St., from Webster. The way the intersection is designed, it seems natural to yield - which is how the intersection was designed, rather than come to a full stop. In addition, Goffe St. is much too wide here - almost as wide as Whalley Ave., so that the people living on either side of the street are impeded from having neighborly relations - they're separated by sixty feet of asphalt, no trees and an intersection designed to move cars, at high speed, through a residential area. This area is another example of the lousy design from New Haven's rightfully maligned urban renewal era.

excessively short light for Henry Street Archived

The traffic light at Sherman Ave and Henry Street, across from the high school is incredibly short for those turning left or right from Henry. I think only 2 or 3 cars can make it through the green light before it changes, its green for about 6 seconds. Whatever you can do to increase the time for this signal would be so helpful for people traveling across town. Thanks!

The traffic light at Henry and Orchard is too short on the Henry St side. Traffic on Orchard gets a long green light but cars on Henry get a very short one. It's a busy commuter stretch for people going to and from Prospect St and during rush hour it's not unusual for only 2 or 3 cars to make it through the light. It's even worse if someone is trying to take a left across traffic onto Orchard -- it stops up the whole works. Also it's a loud neighborhood with a liquor store on the corner, so it's not a pleasant light to be stuck at for a long stretch.

Sherman, Orchard, and Dixwell are all intended as through streets. This is why Henry gets short lights. If you look at a map of the neighborhood, the bigger streets are usually a different color to highlight that they are intended as arterials. I personally ride a bike through this intersection (and run and walk in the neighborhood), and I find the people who live there to be friendly and sociable. You may prefer Goffe, which is intended as an arterial.

How the streets are "intended" and what is required of them in reality are not the same. If you commute from the Westville side of town to Science Park, Yale Divinity, School of Forestry, or any of the offices in that vicinity, you must turn off Goffe to head up the hill. No one should have to drive miles out of their way to avoid a single traffic light when a simpler solution would be to re-program the light. It would greatly reduce congestion in the area at peak hours.

Only fewer people driving cars at the same time would reduce congestion. If the Henry and Orchard light is changed to give priority to Orchard, that would relocate more of the congestion to Henry and Dixwell or Henry and Sherman. As it stands now, morning inbound congestion sometimes backs up from Dixwell to Orchard. The only way to avoid the congestion on Henry is to not drive it, or to take it at a time when fewer other car drivers have the same idea (or to be a pedestrian, as you can sometimes walk faster but that's true all over town at places where heavy numbers of out-of-towners come into the city). I will say that if your objection is to Henry and Orchard light timing, the Goffe and Orchard timing is more 'fair'. Division also has pretty good lights if your goal is Prospect Hill.

Pothole very dangerous Archived

For two years now I have been reporting this issue to the city and my former alderman. The potholes are under the stop light between CVS and Subway. Both sides are effected. When the lead stops at the light its very difficult to excellerate once the light turns green. Going down the same street with subway on the right In order to avoid the pothole I have to cross the yellow line.

I agree, i feel bad for the kids in the morning, walking to school, when its raining out all the cars going through the intersection, splash mud on the them because of the potholes, you can pull of on a green like at 10 miles and you will still splash someone walking

Broadway New Haven, CT

The two lights at the Broadway/Elm area are horribly timed. Because they are not timed together, heavy traffic has a very difficult time getting through. I sat at Elm/Broadway (the first light) for three changes before I could proceed to the next one where I had to stop again. Between the poor timing of the lights and the pedestrian crossing - its a nightmare to get through - especially during peek traffic hours.

Thats all well and good but this isnt an issue of just getting stopped at every intersection and wasting gas - this is a congestion issue that should take immediate priority. I dont see how the article portrays into this situation at Elm/Broadway. Completely different problem. These two need to be insync just to get traffic to flow- period - not just to keep it consistant through downtown.

Sitting at a light for 3 cycles is rediculous and certainly needs addressed now, not later!!!!!!

P.S. Mind you, I was the first in-line at the light where Broadway/Elm meet - for three cycles. It was not a "creeping along" issue - I was completely paralized at the head of the line for three cycles.

Munson St At Shelton Ave New Haven, CT

The traffic light on Munson Street barely lets 2 cars go through it. If the first car is not alert, the light will turn red again before the first car even gets through the light. This is particularly frustrating when there are 5 or 6 cars at the light as you will have to sit through at least 2 red lights - or people are apt to run the light. I called traffic, and they are aware that it is a problem light. She said "oh that weird light." and when I mentioned that people run it, she said "Oh ya, I know."
So - is it going to get fixed?

Intersection Amity Road And Fowler New Haven, CT 06511, USA

New traffic lights were recently installed at the intersection of Amity Road and Fowler. No longer right on red at Fowler. the light stays red on Fowler so long that when it does turn green, traffic is backed up and people still cannot turn right. Then the light ends up turning red again before anyone can turn.
