My name is Corinne E. Blackmer and I am the owner of this property at 215 Dwight Street, New Haven. I currently have 7 tenants in this 2-family house, and all of them own bicycles. They are currently, by necessity, parking them in the front interior hallway, which is a fire hazard, and, as the basement is not accessible to the 4 tenants on the second floor and as the stairwell leading to the basement is too narrow to carry bicycles up and down, I am requesting that the city place a public bike rack near the front of the building. Other neighbors, who are also bicycle riders, would appreciate this as well.

  Thank you for the post. We will look into the viability of assisting with this request, however it does not seem like a bike rack on the sidewalk will solve this issue. It is likely that your tenants would prefer not storing their bicycles outside, as currently there are a number of sign posts at this location which can be used to affix bicycles to. Given the dimensions of the sidewalk here it isn't feasible for us to install enough bike racks to accommodate your needs. You may want to consider investing in a multi-bike rack that could be placed within your property's fence, however this would only be worthwhile if your tenants were willing to utilize outdoor bike storage.
  I would also recommend considering utilizing bike hooks either in the hallway described or the individual units to hang the bicycles indoors and maximize space.

We have about 5-8 bicycle riders living/visiting 219 Dwight Street at any one time, and it would be very useful to have a bicycle rack in front of the house, where noted with an arrow in the attached picture. thanks!

Would it be possible to post a few "No Riding Bicycles on Sidewalk" sign near the corner of Edgewood and Dwight? Some bicyclists speed around the corner and practically run over/into pedestrians. (I've seen similar signs posted on Chapel at Park.)

I'm a cyclist myself and look forward to the Edgewood Cycle Track.

  Hey Jane, those signs are not city signs and were installed either by the university or business district (and are probably technically illegal). Hopefully Edgewood will happen really soon which should mitigate this problem. It's a weird situation as until we have that Portland/Copenhagen bike network biking on the sidewalk might be safest for kids 12 and under. There really aren't a ton of them biking on Chapel and York but with all the residences and schools around Edgewood I wouldn't want them not feeling comfy on the sidewalk. What you could do if you felt so inclined would be to print and cut the attached stencil, buy a can of spray paint and go to town! Good luck!

  I'm trying to reopen this as the issue isn't resolved. Deep Blue: I spoke with the city traffic department and they told me to request the signage here on seeclickfix, so until someone official responds, let's leave the issue open. These are not Amistad school children bicycling on the sidewalk - most of them are on scooters!. These are adults zipping off to classes, and they are aggressive.

  Well, it's nice to see bikers experiencing potholes like car drivers face everyday in New Haven. Perhaps some bikes will have damage to their wheels and suspension like our cars experience, just hope no one flips and gets injured.

Bikes frequently are locked to this handicapped parking sign at 66 Edgewood Ave. There needs to be a sign added, or the sign should be changed to tell bike owners to stop doing this. It prevents passenger-side access by a wheelchair-user to a car or van. There needs to be a fine for this.
