Dear Mayor Petrie and esteemed city council members,

Subject: Request for Lowering Residential Speed Limit in Brooks, Alberta to 40 km/h

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. As a concerned citizen of the beautiful city of Brooks, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the current speed limit in our residential areas. Brooks is known for its close-knit community and vibrant neighborhoods filled with families and children. However, I believe we can enhance the safety of our streets by considering a reduction in the residential speed limit.

The specific street I reside on is particularly concerning, as it hosts both a school and a playground. With houses filled with active families in between, it has become evident that the current speed limit of 50 km/h is proving to be an unreasonable and unsafe speed for such a densely populated area.

The tight residential area, cluttered with parked cars on both sides of the street, creates a hazardous environment for both pedestrians and drivers alike. The current speed limit fails to adequately address the safety concerns associated with children playing, families walking, and residents navigating the area. Lowering the speed limit to 40 km/h would allow for increased reaction times and reduce the risk of accidents, making our streets safer for everyone.

Several studies have shown that lower speed limits significantly decrease the severity and frequency of accidents in residential areas. A reduced speed limit will not only contribute to the safety of our children and pedestrians but also foster a sense of community by encouraging drivers to be more aware of their surroundings and the presence of fellow residents.

I am kindly urging the city council to take this matter into serious consideration and initiate the process of lowering the residential speed limit across the entire city of Brooks to 40 km/h. Such an initiative would demonstrate our city's commitment to the well-being of its residents and promote a culture of safe driving within our community.

I understand that implementing this change will require careful consideration, but I firmly believe that it is a vital step towards ensuring the security and comfort of our neighborhoods. If needed, I am more than willing to assist in any capacity to facilitate this transition.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing about the progress made in addressing this matter. Together, let's make Brooks an even safer and more delightful place to call home.

    Sincerely,

    Forrest Cameron
