Last year (spring 2023) SCG started a 3 phase project to replace the gas lines on my street (Sherland Ave). SCG completed 2 of the 3 phases, summary below:
- Completed placing the new lines in the street
- Completed the internal house gas line
- Open, they did not finish connecting & relocating the gas meter outside of the houseI have reached out to SCG but they have not called me back.
Questions
- Do you know when SCG will be completing the 3rd phase?
- Why there has been a delay?
- Who else should I contact? Thanks for your help with this matter.

Public Space, Streets and DrainsLa qiray100 Chatham St New Haven, Connecticut, 06513 - Chatham SquareEvery once and again there’s a periodic review of postings and old requests are closed. However there’s been a LOT of discussion but no action taken on Issue ID 5439 and Issue ID 8658. These issues were posted - respectively - 5/15/2009 and 9/28/2009. Will the City of New Haven and/or Dept. of Public Works please give a definitive answer or time table regarding the resolution of these requests?

Public Health on the Green
Great job to the City for removing the benches on the Lower Green. It’s an urgent step in the right direction. Please urgently remove the benches on the Upper Green as soon as possible, and honestly, all seating areas on both the Lower and Upper Green including the stone benches, should come out for now.
They’ve become a serious public health risk, with discarded needles, vomit, and human waste appearing daily. People with small children often don’t realize the danger and sit there as one would.
When the Green begins to stabilize and maintain itself again, benches can certainly be reintroduced. But right now, it’s in everyone’s best interest to remove them, or, at minimum, ensure the area is sanitized daily.

401-401 State St New Haven, CT, 06510, USA - DowntownThis was the closest category but there wasn't one that really fit. Many pedestrians leaving the trains at State St Station meander down the new car exit and then walk across traffic (often while looking at their phones), which blocks cars from leaving along the designated path. I have witnessed close calls between pedestrians and vehicles more than once. There is an adjacent crosswalk indicated for pedestrians but many are not using it. I support the current project under construction; I am hoping that Public Works or the appropriate body can investigate the feasibility of adding temporary signage or some other measure to reduce the possibility of conflict between pedestrians and vehicles at this location.

I appreciate the recent efforts to discourage sleeping on the benches by removing some of them. Unfortunately, this has pushed the same individuals to use the concrete benches around the fountain all day . This week, there hasn’t been a single unoccupied bench there all day.
More concerning, their drug use is now more visible in that location than it was on the benches that were removed. Today, with early school dismissal, many students and families tried to enjoy the Green, but were met with scenes of people using drugs openly or being sick around the fountain. This desensitizes young people to drug use.
The fountain is a main gathering point for our community — it’s where school groups, residents, and visitors naturally congregate. Seeing it decline this way is really upsetting. Would it be possible to modify or cover the stone benches to discourage extended occupancy?
I know it’s an unfortunate situation, but there are examples, like the train station courtyard, where no-seating design effectively discourages misuse of public areas while keeping them welcoming for everyone.
Thank you for your time and for continuing to care for our Green.
