  • 514 28th St Apt 2, Oakland, California, 94609 - Pill Hill
I am submitting a formal complaint regarding an exterior elevated staircase at 514 28th St, which I believe is in violation of California Senate Bill 721 (Health and Safety Code §17973). This staircase serves a multifamily residential building and appears to be constructed of wood or wood-based materials, yet there is no visible evidence that the required SB 721 inspection—mandated to be completed by January 1, 2025—has been performed. Additionally, the staircase shows signs of deterioration, including [e.g., cracked or rotted steps, loose railings, rusted connectors, and instability], raising concerns about its structural integrity and safety. It also appears to lack required safety features such as compliant handrails or guardrails under the California Building Code. For these reasons, I respectfully request that the City investigate this matter and require the property owner to provide proof of compliance with SB 721, including any required inspection reports and certifications or undertake necessary repairs to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
  • 514 28th St Apt 3, Oakland, California, 94609 - Pill Hill
I am submitting a formal complaint regarding the electrical system at 514 28th St (all units), which appears to be old, degraded, and potentially unsafe. The property is a multifamily residential building, and there are visible signs that portions of the electrical system have been improperly or illegally updated without permits or inspection, including exposed wiring, ungrounded outlets, outdated panels, and the use of extension cords in place of permanent wiring. These conditions may present serious fire and electrocution hazards and likely violate provisions of the California Electrical Code and local building safety regulations. I respectfully request that the City investigate the electrical system at this property, verify whether the work was performed legally and to code, and require the property owner to correct any deficiencies or obtain appropriate permits and inspections to ensure resident safety.
  • 4407 Masterson St Oakland, California, 94619 - Upper Laurel
There are a couple of guys on the roof using a torch to melt something onto it. Doesn’t seem safe given how dry it’s been. Just wanted to flag it.
  • 6171 Brookside Ave Oakland, California, 94618 - Upper Rockridge
For the past 6 plus months 6171 has been building a structure in the backyard and there has never been any permit signage in the front of the house. They have also had for that length of time a constant pile of gravel in the street, removing parking spaces, with no signage and no sawhorses.
  • 1221 E 20th St Oakland, California, 94606 - Clinton
They tired to steal the car.
  • 514 28th St Oakland, California, 94609 - Pill Hill

The exterior stucco appears cracked and deteriorated, potentially violating Oakland Municipal Code §15.04.340 (Property Maintenance Code).

The overgrown tree is blocking windows and possibly encroaching on egress paths, potentially violating fire safety and emergency egress requirements (California Fire Code §1030).

The front entry steps lack a handrail on both sides, which may violate California Building Code §1011.11 (Stairway Handrails).

The front door security gate may be a barred egress without quick-release mechanism, violating California Residential Code §R311.2.

The windows on the ground floor appear to have security bars without visible quick-release devices, possibly violating fire escape requirements.

The landscaping appears poorly maintained and may violate Oakland’s blight ordinance (OMC §8.24.020).

Lack of visible address numbers from the street could violate California Fire Code §505.1, which requires clearly visible and legible numbers.

The sidewalk appears uneven near the planter, possibly posing a trip hazard and violating ADA or local sidewalk maintenance codes.

There appears to be no visible lighting at the entryway, possibly violating California Building Code §1205.4 for required exterior lighting.

The drainage near the base of the stairs may be insufficient, risking water intrusion and violating waterproofing codes.

  • 3602 Richmond Blvd Oakland, California, 94611 - Oakland Ave-Harrison St
These people are making a new driveway that is way too short. Do they even have a permit to do this? I don't see how a car can even park there. Any car is going to stick out into like half the sidewalk. My partner is blind and uses a cane. We walk this street every day. This is dangerous for him and others. The city needs to come and stop this.
