7:45 PM on August 28 I saw two young white males carrying wooden pallets into the leddy Park Beach area. Perhaps they’re taking these wooden pallets on a field trip, but I suspect they’re planning on dumping them on the beach and building an illegal and potentially dangerous bonfire. Pointless to contact the police cause they’re not gonna do anything so I walked to the fire station on North Avenue.
When I got to the fire station couldn’t locate a doorbell, but I did notice that the door to their fitness area was UNLOCKED. I was trying to respect their space and didn’t want to scare them by walking inside, so I waved my phone at one of the firefighters that I saw upstairs in the station. We made eye contact and I motioned for him to come outside. I waited five minutes he never came outside. I wanted to share this picture with him to give him a chance to decide if they had a little time they might wanna take a ride down to leddy Park tonight. But instead, I’m posting it here because no one ever came downstairs to meet me, and I saw at least two firefighters upstairs by the windows. Also, firefighters might want to lock all the doors because anyone can just walk in to use their fitness equipment and who knows maybe someone might do worse.
I get that they’re busy and they’re overworked and I’m very appreciative of them, but I was disappointed they couldn’t take 5 minutes because what if what I was reporting were more serious than this? I’ve reported pretty serious stuff like cars driving down the bike path or suspicious people leaving suspicious bags on Church Street and then walking away and have been ignored or laughed at by the police - or accused of lying or “changing my story” when my “story” was not accurately listened to. I grew up in a way bigger city that has been dealing with heroin and theft and killings for 30+ years, I’m not stupid. I know what something suspicious looks like. Was this life threatening? Probably not. But reckless behavior and fire is not something we should turn a blind eye to. That’s exactly what happened with the attics downtown, we ignored them when the pandemic hit and no one listened, now look.

Please prioritizing paving accessible parking spots. It would be incredibly unsafe for anyone with mobility challenges to get in and out of car in these accessible parking spots. Merci!
