  • 457-461 Lafayette St Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem
Flashing light for people walking the bike path to cross Lafayette close to the lead mills and Salem/Marblehead line. Unfortunately drivers completely ignore the light. We get halfway across when one side of traffic stops but people speed through on the other side, nearly hitting us. This should be a full traffic light, not a flashing orange light.
  • Norman St & Summer St Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem

Who had the idea for this rotary? Seriously, it seems that the city planners are deliberately trying to find any ways they can to grind this city to a standstill for traffic! Putting in bike lanes and then putting up signs for bikes to use the full lane. New stop lights that create more backups. Putting in one-ways that block off arteries out of the city. Now a rotary (really a roundabout) in one location that actually flowed (noticed how there are no lights at that intersection?)!

You put in a rotary in the ONE intersection in the whole downtown that actually flowed smoothly! We have been driving in and out of Salem for 22 years and never has that intersection been a problem (October wkds not included, but that is a problem at EVERY intersection downtown).

As someone who has been involved in civil engineering, I can tell you that the only time we ever put in a rotary is to slow things down/stop vehicle/pedestrian accidents. Emphasis on SLOW THINGS DOWN...as in, slow to a crawl. Salem needs to IMPROVE the FLOW of traffic, not create more backups!

The problems downtown are the Essex/Summer intersection and the Washington/Derby/Norman intersections. That second one is mainly just because the city STILL refuses to address the issue of having multiple huge crosswalks across a main artery. Instead, they try to make it look like they are doing something by foolish projects like a rotary in a spot that already works! People just need to drive conscientiously, like making sure to stop so that there is room for turning traffic to make the left turn down Norman while waiting for the traffic backup caused by the Essex St intersection to move. No amount of rotary, planning, etc, can account for people being awful on the roads.

Look at other cities that work well. Set walk signals up at the cross walks that change WITH the signals. So traffic goes at the same time that the pedestrians do in the same directions. Not these huge, 60-second stoppages IN-BETWEEN light cycles! Boston does it. NY does it. Vancouver, BC does it. Houston does it. St. Louis does it...and so on.

For Essex St (at both Summer and Washington) if signals cannot be put in, then consider building maritime-themed and/or witch-themed pedestrian bridges with ramps. They can be made as gorgeous accents to cities if done correctly (emphasis on that part). If nothing is done to get the Essex St intersection moving, the rotary itself is meaningless as you will just have the same problems with cars all backed up waiting for that light.

As for the rotary...please remove it. It was not even instituted properly, with a poor curvature resulting in a hard left turn instead of a smooth transition. Another thing you do not do with rotaries is PUT THEM IN WHERE PEDESTRIANS COMMONLY CROSS! Very, very dangerous.

I have read some people on here say that this is a 'green' solution because cars do not have to stop. Whomever is saying this has no idea what they are talking about and/or have no experience with this. First off, cars today are built with partial-zero and zero emissions. In addition to that, they also normally shut off the engine when having to stop and go in traffic. Ignoring all that (and why would you??), as noted, rotaries SLOW TRAFFIC DOWN, causing more backups. Which means more people just sitting there, idling anyway (if that is your worry).

The downtown traffic needs to be addressed, but in the right spots/way. This location is NOT the problem, but it will become a newly-created one by the city if left here. Take real action at the true problems which I mentioned above.

As one more example, look at the Cape. Millions of dollars were spent to create the 'flyover' to improve traffic flow. What was it? Removing the rotary at the Sagamore Bridge! It has had a huge impact. Population growth and increased tourists/vacationers will offset the gains but the removal of the rotary has greatly decreased the backups, especially compared to what they would be now with the increase in traffic.

  • Canal Street Lights Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
To the city electrician and/or parking director....what is going on with these lights?? They look like they are new at Mill St but now every single day I am backed up to the Sidelines restaurant! It can literally take me half an hour to get down Canal now! At first it seemed maybe it was construction or an accident, but nope, come to find out it is the timing of the lights! Noone can make a turn, as the signal only lets through a couple of cars at a time. I saw yesterday a teenager almost get hit because people were just driving through the red left turn signal. Please do not let that be what pushes the city to actually take action, someone getting hit!! Please fix this, back to the way it used to be. Same for the light at the other end, which was changed to a 'flashing yellow'. Just because it is flashing does not mean you can turn. And since the city seems to not care that cars park on Loring, blocking the right lane where it specifically says 'no parking', Loring is constantly backed up to Leggs Hill with that left turn signal to Jefferson that lasts for 3 seconds.
  • Randall Street And North Street Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
There is no stop sign at the end of Randall Street that meets North Street. People think its OK to drive fast down Randall Street and pull right out into oncoming traffic. Due to the lack of a stop sign I have almost been hit in the cross walk many times. Please add a stop sign there.
  • Boston St & Grove St Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem

There needs to be better signalling or traffic enforcement at the intersection of Grove St and Boston Street. It isn't hyperbole when I say that 3/4 times I'm turning left (on green, obviously) into Boston Street from Grove I almost get hit by a car barrelling through the traffic lights on Boston. I think part of the issue are cars turning right onto Boston St from Nichols St, unable to see that it's a red light nor the cars turning, with the right of way, onto Boston St.

Please do something about people running the red light. Please also do something so people turning from Nichols can safely make hat turn

  • Orne St. @ Rt 114 Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
The signal timing at the intersection of Rt 114 with Orne and School St. creates very long traffic lines at both sides of Rt. 114, while there are rarely more than 3-4 cars waiting on either Orne or School Str.
I attach a photo of the traffic jam on Rt. 114 North on the morning of 9/25 that extends all the way into downtown Salem.
More time needs to be given to Rt. 114 traffic.
  • Summer St & Essex St Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem
The traffic light at the intersection of Essex Street and Summer Street gives a walk signal at the same time that it gives a green light for vehicles to go. VERY DANGEROUS. And I see that someone else reported the same thing a week ago. This needs to be fixed asap before someone gets hit and killed.
  • 47 Broad St Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem

A lot of drivers speed way above the speed limit when driving along Broad St. There are sometimes police cars nearby during the day to pull over speeding drivers, however the problem is extremely apparent when they are not present on any time of the day. Residents have often heard cars "racing" along Broad St.

Many residents find crossing Broad St. to be very unsafe as the current speeding checks are not being enforced enough. We would like to propose either a change in the Broad St and Dalton Pkwy traffic signal to impose frequent stops and/or a speed bump.

Even with the walk-button that the traffic light allows, cars still speed through if the pedestrian is not on their side of the road. There is widespread concern about the safety of this street.

  • 51 Broad St Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem
The walk lights at the Dalton Parkway/Broad Street intersection are not working. I’ve tried 3 different buttons, none of which resulted in a red light for the traffic nor did I get walk signals.
  • 22 St Peter St Salem, MA 01970, USA - City of Salem

At both the junction of Bridge Street/St Peters Street and Bridge Street/Washington Street there's an issue with the timing of the lights.

At both junctions I've seen this happen multiple times this week, most recently twice today Traffic heading north/south on Bridge Street will have a green in both directions, traffic heading north will then get a red, but traffic heading south still has a green for at least another ten seconds.

It would make sense if the green filter was activated at that time for traffic to turn left onto St Peters or Washington, but that's not happening. It's really weird to be stopped heading north on Bridge Street when traffic still has a green heading south.

  • 1a And Jefferson Ave Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
When we travel down Loring to this intersection early in the morning (4-5 a.m.), the light never turns green. I have to run a red light to get to Rt 1A.
  • 132 Bridge St Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem
Bridge Street Speed Limit Enforcement. With no speed bumps, one traffic light, and houses very close to the street, it seems that Bridge Street speed limit should be reviewed, maybe dropped, and enforced. Traffic flies down Bridge. If we localized this stretch with stop signs, bike lane, larger shoulders maybe more thru-traffic would use the Bypass. Would love to learn more about how to help make these changes!
