Last fall, Burbank Road was the happy recipient of traffic modifications that reduced the number of people speeding through in order to avoid stopping at the light at Winthrop and Lawrence. Sadly, the signs were removed (as planned) in late fall and we are now back to seeing cars whizzing by, being honked at by drivers while we back into our driveways, and taking our life in our hands as we walk across the street to talk to our neighbors. What would it take to make those changes permanent? The reason why the problem exists is that there is no right on red at Winthrop and Lawrence. The danger that a right on red there posed to pedestrians has now transferred to the corners at Burbank and Badger, where instead of having a well defined corner, there are two corners where cars sometimes act as if there are two lanes, or a lane and a turning lane, or a lane and racetrack with an out-of-the-blue car darting straight toward the nearest pedestrian.

There are two possible solutions to this set of problems; one involves restricting the flow of cars onto Burbank, and the other involves establishing two lanes at the light at Winthrop and Lawrence and enabling cars to take a right on red. Which one would be best for the City?

  • 40 Cedar Rd N Medford 02155, United States - Medford
The word stop used to be painted on the street but due to utility work is no longer there.
  • 3 Forest St Medford MA 02155, United States - Medford
Not urgent, but the traffic signal on forest street going towards Main Street needs to be addressed. The green light is (and always has been) very short, especially in comparison to the light on Salem street. It is so short that in the mornings, traffic on forest street is sometimes backed up all the way to Lawrence road. This causes problems for residents in the area. Any way it could be adjusted to make the green light cycle longer?
  • Harvard Ave & Mystic River Rd Medford, MA, 02155, USA - Medford
Traffic light is flashing steady - not in operation. Very busy intersection.
  • Riverside Ave & Park St Medford, Massachusetts, 02155 - Medford
This intersection poses an incredible risk to anyone driving on it. If you drive on Park St. towards Riverside Ave. and attempt to make a left, there is about 10 feet of visibility to the left. The lights are set to flashing yellow for Riverside and flashing red for Park. So essentially, you are having people making a left, stop and make the turn when able. That said, everyone blows the speed limit and with 10 feet of visibility, there’s no way to see someone coming. Add to the fact that half of people don’t turn their lights on during dusk (aka commuting hours), this is a great danger to public safety. There is a lot of traffic that goes through park st to turn onto Riverside. I bet there are so many accidents on this road, all because for some reason we added flashing lights as opposed to traditional traffic lights.

locust and freedom way traffic light on the boom is twisted / facing wrong direction
  • Fellsway @ Central Ave Medford, MA 02155, USA - Medford
The stoplight no longer allows people coming from Central Ave towards the Fellsway to turn left without waiting for oncoming traffic, thus causing significant traffic backup on Central Ave. The intersection has become more unsafe now because of it.
  • 501-501 Winthrop St Medford, MA, 02155, USA - Medford
The induction coil that triggers the light for traffic leaving the High School does not detect bikes. That means if you leave the high school on a bike and wish to turn left onto Winthrop St, you can't do it until a car comes up behind you.

Our politicians should be ashamed of themselves. This whole part of the city is a disaster. "Every man for himself" is a terrible policy to hold. Stop blaming the state and get something done.
