Last Thursday (Feb 2) afternoon at 3:27pm, my 6th Grade daughter almost got hit by a car when crossing the cathedral Ave in front of the school administration building. The walking sign turned white indicating safe crossing for pedestrians however as she stepped down to the road and started to walk across the street, a beige car rushing through from the 7th street making a left turn totally oblivious of her on the road. As I was witnessing a potential disaster happening from the other side of the road, I screamed. Miraculously my daughter swiftly dodged a direct hit and was very scared. She said to me almost crying “I could have died today“. I yelled to the old lady driving that car “you cannot do this “. The driver slowed down a little then rushed away and escaped the scene.
This was exactly what happened to my au pair 3 years ago, the difference is she was actually hit by the car and ended up with concussion and bruises and had to go back to her country.
Now I realized this issue has to be addressed before another accident like this happens and cause more injuries or even death.
The problem is the traffic light does not make sense. When the walking sign is on, the traffic light facing the 7th street is green. However this is a T section, the traffic coming from the 7th street cannot go straight, it either turn right or turn left. If it turns left it is directly in collision with the crossing pedestrians a lot of the times middle school students. The most dangerous situation was those drivers saw the green lights in distance and assumed they have the right of the road since there is no incoming traffic, so they would speed to try to rushing through the green light and not notice crossing pedestrians at all.
To address this issue, we either change the traffic lights or have crossing guards at school dismissal.
Please let me know what I can do help initiate the changes.
