Cars ignore the crosswalk
I agree, speeding is a huge problem on this street.
Speeding and red light running may not seem like a bad thing for drivers, but please keep in mind that it prevents people from enjoying their neighborhood, from spending time outdoors, and from walking or biking to nearby stores/parks... not to mention being a serious safety issue. Property values along Townsend would definitely rise if something could be done to make the street more "livable." Just as example, there are studies showing that families living along streets with manageable traffic (25MPH or less, MAX) are more than 3-4 times more likely to spend time outdoors and interact with neighbors than families living along streets that have high-speed traffic. So it's a public health issue as well.
In-street pedestrian signs, like the ones that the City of New Haven installed last fall in East Rock, Westville, and Downtown, would be a huge step in the right direction.
Please call the City and your Alderpersons if you have an intersection where you would like to see a sign installed.
Additionally, you should mention support for traffic calming, like narrower lane markings and "chicanes". These are very inexpensive and can help to reduce speeds.
Bottom line is that streets should contribute to the vitality of neighborhoods, not take away from them.
As a resident, I am disgusted with the constant speeding traffic on Townsend Avenue. New Haven has turned the East Rock Neighborhood into a pedestrians wet dream. There are speed bumps, cross walks, signs, bike paths, and traffic circles all designed to keep pedestrians and bikers safe. I am starting to feel like this city devalues its homeowners while catering to sites that host Yale students. One more reason on my list to get out of New haven.
I don't care if this is a State Road or a road to the moon. The bottom line is NOTHING is being done about it. The 'Yield" sign that was put up was gone in a week. We need to do MORE before some poor child is struck by a car or truck that thinks Townsend Ave. is his or her personal highway.
