I agree that speeding along the entire length of Central is a problem. Cars travel as fast as 65 mph and rarely stop for pedestrians at cross walks along Central. That said, I am not sure traffic circles are the way to go on this particular street.

I agree that speeding all along Central is a big safety issue. I walk my daughter to school along here most days and we see cars whipping by all the time. I'd like to see at least a 4-way flashing red at Willard and Central, or else a mini roundabout, like Chris H. mentioned in another post. I also see people speed through the stop sign at Central and West Elm several times a week (often without even slowing down). This is definitely an enforcement issue, but some new paint might also help us. I'd like to see newly painted zebra stripe crosswalks (they're almost completely worn away at Central and West Elm). I've also seen white arrows leading up to intersections around town, drawing driver attention to the crosswalks. I'd like to see more of that at all the pedestrian crossings along Central. Strategies to narrow the roadway and generally get the speed down are also really needed...

I grew up on and still live on the long block of Central between Edgewood and West Elm. My mother's and step father's cars parked next door on the street have been totaled twice in just a few years. A friend down the street had their van hit 4 times and totaled. There are dozens and dozens of children on this street who walk to school and it is not a safe traffic street. We would like to see various low cost traffic calming things tried. One idea would be to paint white lines marking the parking area off from the driving area, making the lanes feel more narrow, and possibly slowing traffic. Alternating parking part way down the street might help too, but we would need to see if we loose too many parking spots, as many multifamily houses on the street do not have driveways. There are many many neighbors that are concerned about this issue all along Central Ave! Ideas on how to fix this problem are welcome!!!!

Speeding cars are a huge safety issue on Central. The stop sign at the corner of West Elm is ignored completely most of the time- since it's in the middle of the block enforcing this stop sign alone would reduce speeding to some degree. That said, Central Ave is just one of the many streets in Westville that speeding is a safety issue. Edgewood, Yale & Chapel to name just a few.

I notice that the speeding problems are actually occurring more between the existing traffic measures(between stop signs and traffic lights). Having additional measures put in in between them to slow vehicles down is needed since the blocks are long and vehicles race to either catch the light or race to see how fast they can go before having to slow down or stop at a light or stop sign.

Home owner, I think you're right that we need to slow people down in between the current stops, too. Right now, Central and Willard is only a flashing yellow for drivers on Central, so that doesn't slow things down at all. Adding raised crosswalks at Burton, mid-block between West Elm and Edgewood, and at Westwood and/or Elmwood might help. But it will be crucial for the city to coordinate measures on Central, Alden and Yale, so everyone who wants to speed doesn't just hop over to Alden or Yale.

Thank you all for posting your concerns! I posted about this problem on April 17, 2014 and I'm sure some have done so way before me. As a resident on the corner of Central and Willard I'm wondering if I started a petition for some action to resolve this and came around for signatures would people be willing to sign? I'm not quite sure who this would be delivered to but I have no problem handing it to the Mayor's office and have her direct it to the appropriate departments!! The streets in our area are ticking catastrophes waiting to happen!!

Speeding is an issue along with general impatience. I was turning left into a driveway using my blinker and almost got tboned because the person behind me went into oncoming traffic lane to attempt to pass.

Nothing has been resolved and this will remain an open issue!!!
