Description
The traffic lights are not timed well for the pedestrian crosswalk here. In particular, when crossing from the north side of Otis to the south side of Otis on the east side of Willow, the vehicle traffic light turns green at the same time that the crosswalk symbol is also still green!
In effect, the vehicles are given a green signal to turn left and potentially hit me while I am still crossing the street.
This is particularly unnerving at night, when pedestrians are harder to see. I suppose I should probably wear a high-visibility jacket, but I generally don't.
I would prefer it if the cars could just wait a few extra seconds for me to finish crossing the street. Then, and only then, once the crosswalk signal has turned red for me, may the vehicles then get a green signal.

Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.
I will pass along your concerns to the Otis Safety Project team; they are gathering information for a review of the project six months post-construction.

Hi,
Over 1 year later and this has absolutely not been addressed.
I cross here every day and have been intimidated by turning vehicles every time, and almost hit by right turning cars and left turning cars multiple times.
While the left turn addressed here is treacherous (traffic light turns green perfectly timed to when pedestrians are in the middle of the intersection, requiring cars to have noticed them while waiting), the right turn is more dangerous because it is a "right turn on red" at a 3 way intersection. This means that cars turning right essentially never need to stop so it is very likely they will hit you even when the crosswalk light is on.
This is a heavily trafficed intersection both for pedestrians and for motor vehicles. However it is really not safe for pedestrians.
