Thank you for reporting your concern to City of Cambridge via Commonwealth Connect. In the future, if you see this type of activity, we encourage you to call the Cambridge Police non-emergency number at 617-349-3300 and an available, nearby officer will be dispatched to the location. Tell us how we're doing by completing a short survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/CambServiceRequests
The cops don't ever ticket these people. Even when I have pointed it out to a nearby officer and specifically requested them to enforce the law the officers say, "I won't do that."
We use this information as part of an ongoing review of data to better understand where and when to deploy officers for this type of enforcement.
In the Harvard and Central Square areas, we have implemented what we call High Intensity Patrols with a hyper focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety-related offenses such as:
• Vehicles stopping and parking in bike lanes.
• Pedestrian crosswalk violations: to include both vehicles and bicycles not stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks.
• Red light, stop sign and turning violations.
• The State’s new Distracted Driving Law.
While these patrols have primarily been assigned to the Central Square/Harvard Square areas (where we see and receive the highest concentration of concerns), we will be looking at expanding the patrol locations to other business districts.
I note how the police account did not respond to the complaint of police officers being told of cars in the bicycle lane yet refusing to enforce the law.
@CaptainCyclist - if you have specifics on badge numbers, data/time/location, etc. as it pertains to your observations, we can share that information with our Professional Standards Unit to conduct an internal investigation.
