Yes, cars are incredibly dangerous, but the answer isn't to force people to hide indoors. Instead, close the street off to car traffic and return the public space to the people.

Vehicular traffic is an essential necessity to the city. Newark Ave is shut down already so people can go there. Restaurants operated fine before without having extra space outside.

Yes, vehicular traffic is essential to the City. No, that 50-yard strip of pavement is not essential for vehicular traffic. Overall the goal of the city, as seen in the Master Plan (and any urban planning literature since Moses), is to reduce the amount of space ceded to cars, not increase it.

The Department of Infrastructure kicked off a Visioning Study for Grove Street in the Spring. The goals of this study are to:

1. Evaluate the tactical/quick-build changes that were implemented on Grove Street between 1st Street and Montgomery Street.

2. Develop a plan for future programming, use, and design for this corridor that balances the City’s traffic safety, sustainability, and placemaking goals with community and business needs and desires.

The final recommendation is to permanently expand the sidewalk on the west side of Grove Street. When this happens, parklets/structures would no longer be permitted, and instead restaurants could have sidewalk cafes.

At this time, parklets are still allowed as per Municipal Code § 296-7.1. As long as they meet the requirements and pay the required fees, they are allowed to operate in these locations. Quality of Life inspectors, working with the Divisions of Commerce and Transportation, issue summonses or orders to remove the structures if found to be noncompliant.
