Description
Severe flooding occurred again today (09/01/21) due to inadequate sewer/ storm drains on the street. The only 2 drains are inadequate to handle the influx of water from both sides of the street. Just hours ago over 6 ft of water accumulated and flooded into our basement destroying everything on site. We experience this only a week and 3 days ago on 08/22/21. Multiple vehicles were lost, we’ve been experiencing this issue for the last 15 years. Within a week and half we were faced with 2 floods due to the 2 storm drains being over taxed. We currently have no hot water or utilities. I have a 97 year old mother and a husband that is a dialysis patient living in this home.

We have submitted a service request with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP.) For your records, your service request number is 311-07498659.
Also, we spoke with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and they informed us that you may be entitled to reimbursement (for damages caused by Henri and Ida) from the City’s Comptroller’s office. In order to qualify, you must submit a claim within the 90-day timeframe given.
As for the flooding issue itself, DEP stated that the storm sewers were overtaxed by the amount of rainfall experienced during both floods. As you know, the sewer mains are built to intake a certain amount of rain per hour and both floods exceeded this amount. DEP’s BWSO (Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations) unit recorded all 311 calls for “Virginia Ave.”-- but are unable to do much, due to the limitations of our current infrastructure. To mitigate flooding in the future, capital projects (that increase the capacity of storm sewers) are required. We were not told whether such capital projects are in the works or not, but DEP has flagged “Virginia Ave.” for further investigation with the BWSO.
If you would like to file a claim (as mentioned above), please fill out and send in the following form:
comptroller.nyc.gov/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/water-damages.pdf
* Please read all directions carefully. You may use the service request number provided above when answering the top portion of page 6, with September 2nd being the day reported.
If you would like support with food and housing, please reach out to the office of Assemblyman Charles Falls at Delvecchior@nyassembly.gov
