Every single day I see people paying for street parking after 6pm and hear people complaining about having to pay for parking in Hartford. I try to inform them its free after 6pm but the signs only state 2 hour parking 8pm-6pm so it 50-50 if they believe me. Also on the parking authority's websites it is doesn't clearly state that it is free. This is the only place i found that states it's free www.hartford.com/parking. Putting up signs or having the the Meters shut down at 6pm would solve this problem and encourage more people to come to the city. Also its just wrong to 'trick' people into paying for free parking.

I agree 100%. I have also told people that it is free after 6 or on weekends and they don't believe me and put money in anyway. In other spots (corner of Main at Capitol for example), there is only a sign that it is 2 hr parking from 6 am to 6 pm, and no sign to pay at the kiosk. SO MANY people park in those spots and then are STUNNED when they come back and have tickets because there is no sign that you have to pay, only that you are limited to 2 hours. Communication is key here.

I have seen people pay to park after 6 and weekends, too. I try to get there in time, but rarely am I successful. It should be more obvious. There is a perception that there isn't any free parking in Hartford... the lack of good signage exaserbates this perception.

Thank you for the feedback. We do understand your concern and have been working on the issue. The meters do not shutdown after 6pm due to technical limitations of the equipment. We are currently researching the next generation of parking meters and it is a certainty that a shut off feature will be included. However, in the meantime, the meter hours are located in the blue circle next to the kiosk screen. As you have stated the hours are also provided on our website hartfordparking.com.
