Description
ISSUE CLOSED: Owner has cut down all the weeds on this lot.
MORE PROGRESS: I was able to get in contact with the property owner through his real estate agent. The owner has sent some people to cut the high weeds. They worked on Friday, July 29th and are back working again today, Monday, August 1.
PROGRESS: On July 26th, a crew with the Dept of Streets and Sanitation came by to cut the high weeds AROUND this fenced in lot and along the sidewalk.
The supervisor told me they cannot go onto the fenced area; however, he was writing up a fine for the owner today. He told me he would come by weekly to issue new fines until this owner took care of the weeds in the large fenced lot at this location.
On July 25th, I made a 3rd report of this lot to 311.
On July 19th, I made a 2nd report of this lot to 311.
Reference #1103405642
On June 28th, I made my 1st report of this lot to 311.
On June 17th, I reported this lot to Alderman Balcer's office.
This overgrown lot is next to Donovan Park. The weeds are 6 ft tall or higher. This lot is 2-3 blocks away from Alderman Balcer's office.
Why are the owners allowed to leave this lot in this condition, especially next to the park? It sends the wrong message about the neighborhood.
The lot was left like this last year, as well.
I am not a native of Chicago or Bridgeport but the grown up lots and trash really bother me. I want people to feel proud of this neighborhood.
Why is there so much trash everywhere? I think the overgrown lots contribute to the trash problem because they give the impression that we don't care about the neighborhood.
There are grown up lots on 3 sides of our building, which is maintained nicely. Why should we be forced to live next to these lots? Are the owners of these lots ever held accountable?

i fail to see how an overgrown lot is the cause of trash. people are just lazy and don't care.
but call 311 and let them now, keep track of when you called. call once a week until the issue is corrected. however as i already mention i doubt the overgrown is the problem.
sure it would better to be cut and such but really the overgrown isn't causing any harm but can be viewed as doing some good.

Thank you for your comments, Doug. I have called 311 and the Alderman's office once. I will take your advice and call again.
to clarify my posting, I don't think the overgrown lots are the cause of the trash but I do think they send the wrong message about the neighborhood. If I were to drive down Halsted St. in Bridgeport for the first time, my first impression would be negative because of all the trash and grown up lots. I think that is a shame for the people who live here.
To me, it seems that people either don't care about the trash and all the grown up lots - just like you say that it isn't causing any harm - or they have just given up on trying to make it better because they don't know how.
Also, haven't you ever noticed there is usually a lot more trash in and around these vacant grown up lots? I have. To say these lots don't affect the trash problem is not true, in my opinion.
Finally, why should people who maintain and care about their homes be forced to live next to these lots? I don't think they should.

i can understand and appreciate your concerns. as a home owner i keep my property clean and neat, which my neighbors always give compliments. and i also get frustrated that not only with the trash but with people flicking their cig butts.
i would assume that you see more trash in the grownup lots because of the wind blowing it and the tall grass/weeds collect them like a spider web, very much the same way my front yard fence collects the trash from the school down the street.

Can the alderman's office tell me if the owner of this lot is being fined? The weeds are significantly higher than is allowed by the city's ordinance and they have been for some time now. How much is the owner being fined per day?
Please respond.

The city has just completed the "Streetscape" project work in front of this block along Halsted. The sidewalks were widened and trees were planted along Halsted. It looks really nice.
I am sure it cost a lot of money to do this. Yet this owner continues to leave his lot grown up with weeds over 5 ft tall right beside all this work. I cannot find anyone who can even tell me he is being fined for violating the city ordinance.

May 23, 2011 site that mentions this lot:

Taken from Reinvention Brewing at Donovan Park -
"Rowena Cheng of Selective Realty Service represents the owner of the block across from the park on Lituanica...Cheng says...the owner wants $1.5 million...Cheng says the owner is in no hurry to sell. He knows what the property is worth.”
