I appreciate your patience as we internally discuss your concern at this location to be sure we come up with the best solution. We believe that the crossing functions most safely when all users traveling within the road (both cars and bikes) approach the crosswalk in the center of the lane, as this provides the best sightlines for seeing pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross in the crosswalk. We agree that some indication for bikes to "take the lane" would be of good use here. Indeed, we have plans for sharrows (shared lane markings) to be installed all along this section of Winthrop St in the not too distant future. More near-term, we will have a handful of sharrows added on the approaches to this crosswalk when crews do the new pavement markings for South Street, which is currently being resurfaced. So you can expect to see those very soon. I hope that you and other bicyclists will find them helpful in communicating the safest lane positioning for this part of Winthrop St.

Update:

The City's last post was accurate at the time. However, the third party entity the City was working with did not complete the work we hoped to accomplish before the cold weather prevented further pavement markings in the area. The City plans to circle back (with the third party) to all markings related to South St this spring. That work is supposed to include some painted sharrows, including the one on Winthrop St that would help address this seeclickfix concern (as described in prev. City comment).

Thank you for reporting this issue to us. We are pleased to report that this issue is now resolved. "Bikes May Use Full Lane" signage was installed on Winthrop St in both directions between South St and Boston Ave.
