Description
Cross walks are needed by Zeman Elementary School at the intersection of 53rd and Woodland Avenue. Traffic can be heavy before school and immediately after for children walking to Zeman. The cars often do not yield to kids, and I’ve seen some close calls with the youngest ones darting across the streets at this intersection and not watching for cars in all three directions. Please make this intersection safer for Zeman kids and others in the neighborhood!

Thank you for contacting LTU. The City of Lincoln began implementation of our new school zone standards last year. Each of Lincoln’s 80+ public and private schools will be evaluated to identify reduced speed zone locations, primary walking routes and locations in need of crossing enhancements. When Zeman Elementary is reviewed, we will keep your comments regarding the intersection of S 53rd Street and Woodland Avenue in mind.
As you have observed, all road users (drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists) must be cautious when entering an intersection, even when they have the right-of-way. We see far too many instances of distracted or impaired drivers disregarding traffic control devices. If speeding or negligent driving on your street is a concern, you may contact the Lincoln Police Department to request traffic enforcement at 402-441-6000 or by filling out the form linked here: Request Traffic Enforcement: https://us.openforms.com/Form/7219aa80-74f1-46ba-b9cc-92c8378a15d9
If you have a neighborhood association or other method of communicating with your neighbors, we recommend reaching out to share your observations and to remind residents to drive cautiously through the neighborhood.
Please visit our website at www.lincoln.ne.gov/traffic to find Traffic Safety Tips for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers or for more information regarding the School Zone Standards.
