Seriously, you wouldn't know how violating this is unless you've had it happen to you. I recently got a unlawful search and the police tried to take my seizure medicine because i happened to be walking through the north end and only had my college student id not thinking I needed my driver's license to walk. No I'm not a criminal and no I do not have a record. Also, i did not look the part of a criminal, I was actually on my way to volunteer at St. Vincent's ( the soup kitchen) when this happened so no it is not good police work it is racial profiling.
Stay out of the north end before you get mugged. Also if you don't look the part how were you racially profiled? What color do you need to be to be profiled? Wrong place for sure and maybe wrong time.
I had a case thrown out in New Haven about 15 years ago because the cop was ignorant enough to say he stopped me (on a bicycle) for being white in a black neighboorhood.
It happens but you can fight it
The Middletown Police are a disgrace. I used to live on Green Street. Once, I called the MPD to ask for assistance because there was a fight going on outside. I was told by the dispatcher, "we don't go to that area of town." I was appalled as I am and was a taxpaying citizen with a decent job. My ex-boyfriend went out and broke up the fight. Sure enough, the police never came. This is your tax dollars at work in Middletown people. Paying the salaries of police who are not interested in protecting citizens. I have been routinely stopped by the MPD with my ex-boyfriend just to be harassed. The cop would say "just making sure you were going to stop at that stop sign", have a nice day. We are both white. It's not just racial profiling in Middletown. If the MPD know you have a criminal record, they will harass you.
Lived in Middletown for over twenty years four of them on Grand street never had a problem with the Middletown Police. I don't have a criminal record but by no means am straight laced.
The college student that was stopped and searched while WALKING is proof that there is a major profiling issue in our town that needs to be put to a halt... (the young man was on his way to the soup kitchen to volunteer for God's sake....
And @PRO Death.....looking the part is simply being black or brown... dont you get it??? WAKE UP.....
the huge cluster of local churches will get together (tons of parishioners) and put a stop top this outrage and harassment that is being carried out by the MPD on the children of the people who built this town. its funny how we are all the same (citizens) when its time to pay property or car taxes..
I do get it and its more than that. Everyone in that area has eyes on them the police are trying to do their job he got questioned. Big deal ! Useful in finding the dealers on the street.
I highly recommend that every citizen familiarize themselves with their rights when encountering law enforcement.
An excellent resource is the ACLU's, Know your Rights guide. It details what rights an individual has when stopped, questioned, arrested, and/or searched by law enforcement. The guide provides information for citizens and non-citizens.
Just because you broke the law and got caught doesnt mean that there is racial profiling going on. Stop breaking the law and you'll stop getting arrested.
The City of Middletown will officially launch SeeClickFix in October 2016. As we ramp up with this partnership, the City is offering a limited number of reportable issue types and we ask that residents submit only the issues listed through SeeClickFix. Other issues not listed through SeeClickFix can be reported by calling the appropriate City Department. If the issue you originally reported has not yet been resolved and is listed through the selectable Issues, please consider submitting a new report through the SeeClickFix system and we’ll be happy to address your concern at that time. Thanks and the City is excited about this new partnership to continue improving Middletown.
