The RWA issued the following press release yesterday and placed an up-front message on our phone system for customers experiencing low pressure or discolored water starting on July 8 and continuing today. The text of our press release is as follows, and news coverage this morning from WTNH is included under our press release. We needed to transfer water to the area normally serviced by Lake Saltonstall, reversing the flow of water in the mains and then reversing it back to its normal flow this morning. Flushing your internal plumbing for 5-10 minutes in a tub or sink should clear your water. If you are experiencing discolored water after 4pm, please send us an e-mail to ask.info@rwater.com to report it. Thank you.

RWA Press Release
People in Branford, East Haven and the eastern part of New Haven may be experiencing low water pressure and discolored water due to an electrical failure early this morning at the pumps that supply water to the Lake Saltonstall Water Treatment Plant. Regional Water Authority crews have made operational changes to the system to be able to continue to supply water to the area and will be working throughout the night to restore water pressure.
One of the operational changes was to reverse the normal flow of water in some of the water mains. This allows the Authority to provide water from other sources to customers in the area. Reversing the flow can stir up naturally occurring sediment in the pipes and cause the water to appear tinted. Customers may wish to review the conditions of their water before use, and may choose to use bottled water for drinking. Customers can also put water in a pitcher and let the sediment settle to the bottom, using the clear water on top for drinking. It is best to refrain from doing laundry, especially of light colored clothing, until the discoloration clears up.
At this time, the situation is still fluid, so no estimates can be given on when water pressure will return to normal or when discoloration will clear up. Another update will be issued tomorrow morning, July 9, at 9:00 a.m.
WTNH Coverage July 9, 2014
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The Regional Water Authority is putting out an alert about discolored water or low water pressure for some residents of Branford, East Haven and New Haven.
The utility says there was a small fire and electrical failure in East Haven Tuesday night at the water treatment plant at Lake Saltonstall.
A recorded message on the utility’s emergency phone line this morning:
If you are calling about low pressure or discolored water in the Branford, New Haven or East Haven area, this is due to the redirection of water to your area as a result of an electrical failure at our Lake Saltonstall raw water conservation early this morning. Reverse flow in water mains can stir up naturally occurring sediment in the pipes and can cause the water to appear tinted. You may wish to review the conditions of your water before use, and you may choose to use bottled water for drinking.
The problem was fixed and the treatment facility was restarted Tuesday night. The water company is expected to provide an update on the water situation this afternoon.
