  You know, I totally hear you. I wish our street was a Slow Street. We tried, but it didn't work out for us (we are also used as a cut-through street and have lots of traffic). But here's the thing. What you describe benefits a few and harms many more. I'm pretty sure that the neighbors on Hillegass are not excited about getting the overflow of traffic from Colby being shut down. I'm sure that residents on Martin are unhappy about the shut down of Forest west of Claremont. And Lawton neighbors don't feel great about the Shafter shut down. And on all of these streets, drivers are forced to make dangerous turns when there is a stoplight one street away that would make it safer for them, other cars, pedestrians, and cyclists (the amount of cars turning left onto Claremont from Martin or left onto 51st from Lawton without the safety of a light is off the charts). Also, why should only a few benefit from property value increases because they happen to own a home on a Slow Street? We all pay taxes for the maintenance of streets, so why do only a few get that benefit and not the many. I support traffic mitigation efforts in residential areas (reducing the volume and speed of cars, making it safer for pedestrians to cross the road, eliminating large trucks from small residential streets, and so on), but this is not the answer. It was a reaction that was do-able and cheap but it is not an equitable solution for the larger community.

  I don't believe the City will maintain the Slow Streets. There is a strong, vociferous opposition especially from residents adversely affected by the redirected traffic to their adjoining streets.
  Those of us who like/appreciate the communal sharing, safer and slower vehicular traffic should pursue a compromise for the Slow Street concept.
  Just as the City has instituted First Fridays as a way to stimulate citizen participation & celebration in parts of Oakland along the Telegraph corridor why not institute a First Saturday or Sunday or Weekend along certain residential streets to encourage residents to get out and walk, meet, bike especially the younger residents and senior strolls. One scheduled day or weekend a month is a small cost to pay for the benefits trade off.
  And a savvy politician could take credit for instituting the innovative First Family weekend program.
