Description

There is a very large and deep pothole here - perhaps 4 ft x 3 ft and 3 inches deep. It's unsafe because it occurs at the intersection of two key bicycle routes. Cars often swerve to avoid the pothole, thereby endangering cyclists. Also, it is impossible to bike over, so cyclists must often enter the opposite lane (and thereby deal with oncoming traffic) if there are parked cars that reduce the road available to cyclists.

Our next step with your request will be to review it and assign it a priority level so that we can respond as promptly and appropriately as we can to the thousands of requests we receive each year. Your input into this process is critical, as we count on our community to be our eyes and ears as new issues arise or existing issues change. OAK311 is our one-stop shop for public maintenance requests, and it's the best method we have for logging, tracking, and prioritizing requests like yours. We’d like also to take this opportunity to share some information with you about how we’re taking on the bigger task of improving all Oakland streets – including fully repaving streets. In general, for our 3-Year Paving Plan (adopted in mid-2019) we prioritized local streets based on the Pavement Condition Index (https://oakgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8802147bcb4b42bfb21846e36205fe4d), working generally from the worst streets next to schools, to the worst streets otherwise, until our budget target was met. With this plan, we will be repaving more than 70 miles of local streets in three years. This is a massive increase in funding dedicated to local streets: in the past ten years we averaged just under 3 miles of local streets paving per year. This is a huge pothole on Forest just west of Shafter. The pothole is very deep and a second deeper pothole is forming inside the original pothole. Forest is marked with bicycle sharrows and this is a huge hazard.

Per Oakland’s new paving plan, looks like Forest from Ayala to College is included for full resurfacing in the 2022-23 fiscal year starting July 1st, so help is on the way! Hopefully these giant holes will at least get some more asphalt fills until the more permanent paving can happen.

Pls fill this very large pothole. Size larger, more like 6 feet long by 5 ft wide. It takes up the entire Eastbound lane on Forest just before Shafter. Lots of large trucks and even the 51 bus drive through it every day. Very hazardous. Center of pothole around 4 " deep .

Lars -- thanks for the photo! Out of town at the moment but I look forward to seeing it with my own eyes! Did they happen to fill any of the many potholes in that stretch of road? (Sorry, that's the cynic in me talking. I'll find out soon enough.)
