Good morning MGK, I am having my driveway re-paved this summer - June, July time frame. Can the City at a minimum do the sidewalk portion at the end of the driveway? I would rather have the sidewalk done prior to having my driveway re-paved. I do not want to pay to have the whole driveway done only to have a portion of it removed to add the sidewalk fixed at a later date. I am the only resident on this street that does not have a city sideway in front of their driveway. Thank you for your time and consideration. Paul

Let me take a look and/or discuss with my boss. While I have only come across one situation where the sidewalk/driveway apron was poured first, then the driveway was repaved - the contractors did not wait long enough for the apron to cure hard and throughout and the asphalt rollers/trucks cracked the apron. Let me just verify everything to make sure your suggestion is or isn't the very best course of action. Thank you. MGK

Interestingly, about an hour ago I spoke to one of the design engineers who did my job in the past and covers me if I go on vacation or something. He/I have one question: Are you repaving the driveway apron, too? That may change the course of action slightly. But, his recommendation is to discuss with your contractor the possibility of including an expansion joint across your new driveway when it is repaved (at $0 cost! :) ), making absolutely sure the expansion joint is then covered over with liquid cold patch asphalt to prevent any moisture/water from seeping into the joint. This would benefit you - no cutting of your new driveway by the town when the town replaces that portion of the sidewalk. It benefits the town and me, if for any reason our sidewalk replacement efforts are delayed in any way/shape/or form - the unexpected things that could/may happen (Murphy's Law) that would conflict with Your and/or your contractor's timing and/or plans. A driveway apron is the section of a driveway that's between the sidewalk and the street. It's usually shaped like a trapezoid and it's usually slanted so that it's flush with the street. Here's a picture of a driveway apron.

I would like to have the same configuration as all the other homes in the neighborhood. The sidewalk and the apron are concrete. I would like to pay the contractor for just paving my driveway and the town repair the sidewalk and apron.

Understood. That is the normal process used. We do not replace sidewalks with asphalt. Asphalt would only ever be used as a temporary measure, on smaller areas, until concrete can be poured. [I have an interesting "challenge" on Newcastle Drive]

Currently we have been replacing sidewalks, as an example, on 4th Street. Please see attached photo as a representation of the severity of damage the sidewalks that Hamden are focusing on.

Thank you, I totally get it. There are sidewalks all over the city that require repair or replacement. My concern goes beyond the repair of the sidewalk. My mother is elderly, almost 83 and uses a cane/walker to get in and out of her house. Though she is somewhat stable when she walks, the damaged sidewalk in front of the house makes it dangerous for her to come in and out of her own home. From the pictures the city engineer provided at her address, the area she needs repaired is much smaller than the pictures of the ones provided. Is there any way the city can help my elderly mother out? I just don't want her to fall coming and going from the house. Thank you again and Happy New Year.
