Agreed! This is getting ridiculous with all the drugs and violence and fires in the area. I definitely feel it is unsafe to walk around in this area with children.

I only go with my husband and only early in the morning. As the day progresses the vagrants become more aggressive. They should have no trespassing and no loitering signs at that corner.

Make sure to thank the COA counsel and worthless Mayor Keller for this growing problem. Their failed policies have created this growth and encourage it.

It is worse by the day, the city is doing nothing, not sure they even know where this part of town is. Now our trash bills have gone up so the city can clean the trash. I agree about not shopping in the Four Hills area, I am 82 & do not feel safe at all. Panhandlers roaming everywhere. This is exactly how LA started, we are well on our way to the same. Such an embarrassment. The mayor should be ashamed!

There is a City Council meeting on June 22nd to vote on the 'Safe Spaces' and 'Living Lots' for the homeless. This is an amendment to the IDO and will result in zoning changes. Email or call the City Councilors and let them know how you feel. We have lived in the Four Hills area for 40 years and are very concerned about the safety issues and the trash and needles.

Renee Grout is our city councilor & I know she is doing everything she can. Maybe the other councilors would like all this mess to move to their neighborhood. Wouldn't that be great? It will never happen though.

Renee is awesome and very supportive. Call or write to the other councilors. Attend the meeting on the 22nd. The City Council needs to hear our voice.

Thanks for all the responses. We need to continue to push back on the city council. I submit the, not unique suggestion, that homeless camps reside in districts where the council person voted for 'Living Lots'.

I completely agree. The Councilors who have voted for these homeless encampments should have the pleasure of the lots placed into their District first. Two are allowed per District and both should be placed in these Councilors districts BEFORE placing them in the Districts that voted against these amendments. Also, religious institutions are exempt. I think this is wrong as this could place way more than the 2 designated by the amendment in a district. Keep the pressure on the Council members who voted for this. Remember, there is a City Council meeting on June 22nd.

That is my understanding, that religious institutions are exempt from the 2/district rule. Please check with your City Councilor for their requirements. Brook Bassan has retracted her support for the homeless safe spaces, etc., so tonight's City Council meeting should be interesting! Ms. Basson has stated that she supported the safe spaces with the understanding that the homeless would be moved off the streets and the existing laws for vagrancy, camping in parks, etc., would be enforced. The mayor, in a speech, put an end to that assumption. The Tuesday Alb. Journal, Opinion, page A13, is devoted to the homeless in Albuquerque. Worth reading. There was a protest yesterday at Eubank & Academy, in Trudy Jones' district, since she voted for the safe spaces. Lots of support for the protest from the drivers.

Thanks you for the information Barb. Services to those that will benefit is a good idea. However, these services are often refused. The homeless have a comfortable place to stay here in Albuquerque. By the way, how is the Tiny Homes and Gateway Center working out? A large sum of tax money has been spent. But I understand only a few qualify for Tiny homes and only women will be allowed at the Gateway center. As long as Keller is Mayor, homeless will continue to be mismanaged and worsen.

Central from Wyoming to Tramway is now Albuquerque’s skid row. Homeless encampments are everywhere, crime is skyrocketed. Took almost 3 months of reporting to get homeless homesteaders with junked RVs, truck campers and tents removed. Even had to get APS involved since they own vacant land near Sandia Technology Park. Law enforcement and stronger penalties need to be implemented or our city is going to crumble. Also, corner gas stations should not be in the business of selling alcohol it’s a magnet for homeless to hang out!

I noticed that the ALON and The Waffle House have closed and are boarded up. It wasn't long ago that 4 Hills Village Shopping Mall was closed. I suppose it will close again. Thank you Keller

The new IDO that would allow sanctioned homeless 'Safe Spaces' was approved and then the City Council tried to get it stopped. That was not successful and the Council is now on vacation until August. My understanding is that it is approved and operational for applications until the City Council re-convenes in August. You might ask your City Councilor to explain the actual facts to find out what exactly is the status. And write and call the Mayor since he is backing the idea. The Four Hills Village Mall is very nice with the new renovation and it's just wrong that the homeless are making the area so stressed that businesses are moving out. There is a new homeless encampment in Wilson Park (San Pedro south of Zuni) with it's new million dollar renovation. The residents are up in arms that they can no longer use the park and the Catholic church has had to fence their property. This mayor has been completely ineffectual in dealing with the homeless issue.

I believe the mayor must have stock in a fencing company. The building I work in has put up a fence. Fences are showing up in a number of places. I don't recall the Council Lady that voted for 'Safe Space' before she voted against it. But I suppose we have to pass bills before we know what's in it.

The homeless is ruining the four hills village mall! It is so sickening to even drive near tramway and central. We pay property taxes and these homeless people that don’t like to have any responsibilities get to trash and ruin whatever they want! Let the mayor have them in his neighborhood and see how he likes it!!

The only way to get this changed is to band together, go to meetings such as the City Council and local neighborhood associations. We all need to step up with actions that can set in motion positive solutions for this issue. Get to know the local and state representatives and demand they take action. The City Council has voted for a moratorium on the Homeless Safe Spaces until August (I think) of 2023. That is only a stop-gap measure as we will have this to do all over again, but at least for now it is stopped. Get with your neighbors and start a write-in or call campaign to all of the City Councilors, the mayor or State Representatives. Force Homelessness to become a HOT issue. I don't know of another way to bring Albuquerque back.
