Description

There are several storm grates along Pine Street, and surrounding streets (e.g. Russell Street) that have linear openings which run parallel to the street's direction of travel. These should be replaced with modern cross-hatched grates, or the existing grates should at least be turned perpendicular to the direction of travel.

There is significant risk that the wheels of a bicycle can fall into these parallel openings causing the bicycle to stop suddenly, most likely tossing the rider over the handlebars.

The roadway has been configured like this for years. But since the Independence Greenway has opened nearby the bicycle traffic has greatly increased in the area, increasing the risk of injury to someone not familiar with the problem.
