Descripción

There is a raw sewage smell in the neighborhood starting at 7pm. This issue has been persisting for months and months with no acknowledgment and no solve in place. Nearly every night this extremely disgusting, and overpowering odor takes over the entire neighborhood. This is an absolute disgrace that these residents of Fitchburg have to shut themselves indoors and close all their windows lest they turn their houses into an indoor Porto-John. I can’t imagine the negative health effects breathing this in is having on my family and young child.

This issue has been persisting since my original complaint. The only thing that has changed is now I know it’s the paper plant Grief who is the one release the noxious smell into the air. If anything it has gotten worse. They are now releasing the smell earlier and earlier ( on Halloween they starting doing it at 6pm. The smell was so awful I could not even take my son trick or treating). Why is nothing being done about this issue? Why is grief allowed to pollute the air of a community with no repercussions? It feels like no one in the city government even cares or is acknowledging this problem.

We are in the process of addressing the issue with Grief Containerboard. There are multiple parties involved including MassDEP, City of Fitchburg Wastewater and Grief. Unfortunately, there is no simple solution here but rather a multi-faceted one that involves process changes at Grief and a reworking of the sewers to serve the mill. All of this takes time and we ask for your patience. Nonetheless, please be assured that this is a high priority issue that will see resolution. If you want to talk with me, please contact me directly at 978-829-1878. In the meantime, please email me whenever odors are present as we need to keep a log of the instances.
