The traffic warnings you describe are part of Metro's neighborhood "traffic calming" program, which requires an application from an organized neighborhood group or homeowners association. I clicked on the link you posted in your comment, but the page text is cut off by advertisements so I could not read the MNTMP. Also, I am not sure how long it would take to rally a Neighborhood Group, it could take a while...so, in the meantime, will drivers just be able to speed through the neighborhood? Why can't an individual be enough to prompt safety, which SHOULD be a requirement, especially in neighborhoods with school zones?

You, as an individual, have prompted further study of whatever may be needed to ensure safety at this location. That will include reviewing what signs are already in place, checking for accident history, and collecting appropriate engineering data so that decisions are made on fact and sound judgement, not one resident's perception. Metro's traffic calming program is designed to work as an initiative that involves consensus of all residents in a community to address problems and issues specific to their area. Not all traffic calming options work in every neighborhood. We prefer to work with the entire neighborhood rather than individual residents to address issues with community-wide impact.

Incidentally, a double yellow line on a street means that passing is prohibited at all times. Drivers choosing to disobey a posted speed limit would be a police matter, and we have shared your emails with the Metro Police Department to request additional police presence.

One last thing that needs to be mentioned, which I think may have been lost in translation, so to speak, is that side-streets in my neighborhood have ALREADY been designated as a "traffic calming neighborhood", complete with signs and road painted markings. The issue at hand is the lack of these same safeguards against speeding on my street. I do indeed have a double yellow lines painted, but over the 1/2 mile stretch, there are several side streets with twisting and turning... and only 1 speed sign from each direction. What makes no sense at all is MPW's lack of logic in the placement of the existing ""traffic calming neighborhood" markings, which exist on only 1 of 3 major (double yellow line) streets. Does it make sense that anybody would speed on side roads stretching 100yards, and casually cruise down my major road at a joyful 30mph? I think not. The people have already spoken regarding the speeding in my neighborhood, following your agency's not-so-convenient method of diagnosing safety issues; the failure is on MPW's inability to logically place these signs where they are needed most.

If you would, please, provide a phone number where you can be reached, and the engineer who manages the program can contact you to explain why pavement markings were placed and what else may be done to address your concerns.

Recently, “speed limit 30 mph“ pavement markings were installed on Fairlane Dr. west of Packard Dr. and also on nearby Strasser Dr. The traffic engineering staff will look into this request to install ” 30 mph “ pavement markings on Packard Dr. south and north of Fairlane Dr. , and also on Packard Dr. just north of Tusculum Rd.
