Description
There are two yacht clubs along Quincy Shore Drive. Both clubs can be accessed from the water by a common channel; however the channel has filled with sand from the ongoing DCR beach maintenance project. At low tide people cannot go back and forth to their boats because the water in the channel is too low. Rumor has it that money had been set aside by the State of Massachusetts to dredge the channel, however within the City of Quincy there seems to be a problem prioritizing the job.
The yacht clubs have members who are working class citizens and retirees. Dues are not high but members are expected to put in work hours to maintain the building and programs. The City of Quincy collects taxes on the boats moored in the harbor by the clubs, however it seems the City of Quincy does not want to take responsibility for maintaining the water way. If the City of Quincy were to facilitate dredging that water way, .construction workers would be employed.
From a safety point of view having the channel open would allow emergency marine equipment and manpower quick access to the city intra structure.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding this important issue. As a way to provide some background, the Mayor is certainly well aware of this issue. He has met with representatives from the yacht clubs, the State, and the Federal government. As you can imagine, this is a complex project that requires significant site design and interaction with the Army Corps of Engineers. The City is fully supportive of this project, but we cannot offer a timeline for when this work will start and end.
Sincerely,
Chris from the Mayor's Office

This issue should not be listed as closed until the channel is dredged. The channel has been in need of dredging for several years. I believe if this remains open several more people will put pressure on the Mayor to cooperate with the state. The mayor refused to accept money towards this project last year.
This issue is a right of way on the water rather than a traffic issue. I would prefer to see the mark moved to over the water at the above address.
Thank You,
Pam

Hi Pam,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding this important issue. As a way to provide some background, the Mayor is certainly well aware of this issue and has not at any point refused funding to mitigate this problem. He has met with representatives from the yacht clubs, the State, and the Federal government. As you can imagine, this is a complex project that requires significant site design and interaction with the Army Corps of Engineers. The City is fully supportive of this project, but we cannot offer a timeline for when this work will start and end.
