need ped. crossing signal
Agenda from Sep 15th meeting of the Connecticut State Traffic Commission:
I believe STC # 092-0909-06 gives State permission for the City to install the new signal.
The Cancer Center is about to open in 2 weeks, adding significantly more vehicular and pedestrian traffic to this entire area.
The city, state and others had previously promised (in writing, I believe) that crosswalk signals and geometry improvements would be fully completed prior to the opening.
Should the opening be delayed until this life-or-death issue is actually addressed?
It looks like they most certainly won't be installed in time for the opening of the new YNHH Cancer Center, unfortunately -- though perhaps with enough citizen pressure, our priorities can be changed and they will be.
How bad would it be, in terms of PR and New Haven's image, if the YNHH Center opened and yet another pedestrian were seriously injured or killed here? The last time someone died here, everyone walking by and being interviewed by the local paper called it a "death zone." http://downtownnewhaven.blogspot.com/2009/05/biotechnologist-critical-after-crossing.html
From talking with a lot of people who work in this area, I know many other people feel this way.
Given the track record, another death soon before or after the Cancer Center opens, is definitely not just a remote possibility.
It is appalling that 1,000 people here requested a pedestrian signal 3-4 years ago, with still nothing done and the Cancer Center about to add thousands more visitors every day.
