For several thousand yards along the railroad right-of-way, trees are being chopped down, even larger ones with up to 2-foot diameter trunks. What is up with that?

Just some additional thoughts: obviously the trees cut down are not coming back. It has drastically changed the feel of the park, especially in the skateboard park and spray park area. The line of trees that is now simply gone opens up the view on the river, but also on industrial buildings below the canal start.
However, if someone can talk to the railroad people responsible for all these trees being chopped down, as they continue to work north towards MD and to the top end of the park, it would be great if they could leave the BIG trees, and just cut down the scrubby saplings, vines and shrubbery that is overgrown.
Not sure why all these beautiful large trees are coming down.... I would think they do a great job of keeping the bank from sliding down onto the tracks, and that that would outweigh any minor risk of a tree coming down in a storm.
I guess the railroad company can do what it wants on it's right of way, but I would have loved for SOME of these trees to remain... both visually and environmentally.
