Useless response from G-Burg traffic engineer. When someone dies at that intersection, it will be on his conscience. I have a masters degree in transportation engineering and there is no question that partial Yield is protecting people. All those kind of signs do is to train the driver to ignore that sign 99% of the time and that's not a god model.

Youre upset because people disregard a sign to yield? That definitely sounds like it is the City's fault... Do you think also that all channelized right turns with crosswalks running through them should be ctop controlled? Dont get all hurt because people all over MD cant properly drive, let alone read a sign. an MS in TE? from where? apparently they taught you nothing.

The Yield only when a pedestrian is present signs teach the driver to ignore the sign most of the time and become accustomed to driving past it and eventually disregard it entirely. This is extremely dangerous to pedestrians. I'm not against all new models of traffic control, but this one is teaching drivers the wrong habits and endangering pedestrians.

No, it teaches drivers to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk. This is much like a complaint that schoolchildren would not push the button to cross the intersection, and the school wanted automatic pedestrian phases. It doesnt change the fact that the children needed to push the button, and were not, get this, reading the sign. And what is so technical about a channelized right turn? I only brought about this "Technical" term since it also applies to vehicles yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk (that crosses the channelized right turn lane to the island). Also, safety is on both the Driver AND the Pedestrian. People driving and disregarding a traffic sign is not grounds for installing another traffic sign, which may entirely be disregarded as well. Even further, any traffic control device, well before its installation, will need a thorough and current traffic study to determine both the need and effectiveness of the device. It seems that the yield has worked so far, and since no major issues have been reported, it will stay that way.
