I actually asked the person clearing the Y parking lot to clear the sidewalks too and he told me he didn't have to and that they have 24 hours... well, it's been 48 hours. Horrible neighbors!
I've visited this site and the sidewalk is clear. Perhaps it should've been done sooner but the Y is a good neighbor. I think using this tool to express exaggeration does little for your cause, by the way.
My "cause" is to have sidewalks in my neighborhood clear of snow in a timely manner. I saw this situation on Thursday but gave the Y another day to clear the sidewalk...that did not happen. So I had to resort to using this more public method. I don't think the photo is any kind of exaggeration.
It's tough to talk about what kind of neighbor they are unless you actually are a neighbor here. How do you know? I've never had problems with any of my other neighbors parking on the sidewalks, despite there being options an extra 10 feet away. They were the last to clear their snow. The liquor store that wasn't even open on Thanksgiving had their sidewalks cleared the next morning. It took another day and a half of the neighborhood walking on ice for the Y to do it. And, I even asked the truck that was clearing out their parking lot to do it (see above)! It's just one more message to the neighborhood that they don't care about us, while they make sure their patrons from South Hadley can park their SUVs. Think about it.
The sidewalk is cleared. Now folks will not slip and fall on their way to being raped. Can we please stop picking on the YMCA? They do so much for the community. Thanks Councilor Bartley for pointing out the hypocrisy.

Sorry. I said that it was cleared because I took Councilor Bartley on his word. I will never make that mistake again.
I drove by the location myself and now I see that someone has abandoned a vintage snow-blower there. Perhaps this is a message to the YMCA? Or, maybe the idea is that Councilor Bartley can use his small engine repair skills to get this thing fired up to clean it up himself; instead of blowing smoke up our collective butts?
You're right. Today at 1:05 pm I noticed two pedestrians who were walking in the street because the sidewalk in front of the YMCA's property on Appleton at Pine was covered in snow and ice. Definitely a potential safety situation, and I am not sure why Councilor Bartley is saying that it's clear when I can see with my own eyes that it is not.
Councilor Bartley is correct, the sidewalks are all clear. Now out-of-town folks will not slip and fall on their way to being sexually assaulted. So what that they took another 24 hours to take action? They have another entire city block of sidewalks AND a huge parking lot to clear. That is a tremendous amount of work as it is; never mind that they do so much more for the community. Can we close this issue now and stop harassing the YMCA? The YMCA is the best kind of neighbor. Please, show some respect.
Just to be clear: the way that the YMCA and the city dealt with the issue of dangerously icy sidewalks was to do nothing and wait until the ice melted.
Also, something is indeed wrong with SeeClickIgnore. That comment that appears 2 hours ago was actually made on 11/29. It was deleted and then it reappears as a new post? Strange. If admins are going to be able to delete and restore posts then the posts should keep their timestamp. Buggy.
