We have received your traffic calming request. Please note:
BDOT has several hundred requests for speed cushions. We have a limited install capacity and limited funding for this program, so please be patient as these requests can take an extended time to be processed.
All traffic calming requests must go through our standard procedure and process. Below is a recap of this policy and a link to our official policy on our website. Please read that for more information.
- For speed cushion requests, the speeds on the reported roadway must meet a certain threshold to be warranted. The city will send out a data collection team when staff is available to collect the speed data. We are unable to move forward with a request for cushions if these conditions are not met. If the speed data doesn’t meet the threshold, we may look at alternate solutions.
- Once the data has been collected, and a determination has been made if speed cushions are warranted, a design is created. This is shown to our working group with Birmingham Police and Birmingham Fire, among other partners, to determine if this will affect their response time or access.
- After our working group approves the design, BDOT will create a petition and send to you. You must get 2/3 of the active households on the street to sign the petition and return it to the city. If this petition is not returned, we are unable to move forward. Additionally, the petition will include a one-year deadline. If not returned within a year, we must close the case.
- Once we have received a petition from the neighborhood, we request a quote for the purchase of cushions from out approved vendor. We present the quote to the local neighborhood association where the proposed location of speed cushion installation is, and request they fund ½ the cost while BDOT funds the other ½. If funding is approved, we may order the cushions and place put the location on the install queue.
Please be sure to include your phone number and email address for us to move forward with this process. We will keep this post updated as we move forward.
