There is a lot going on when crosswalks are located so close to the traffic circle. Drivers are concentrating on not getting hit by approaching cars, then they can barely get their rear end out of the circle and they have to stop. Maybe the speed limit in the traffic circles should be lower. Maybe the pedestrian crosswalk signs are in the wrong place.
The posted speed limit on Franklin Street is 25 MPH. Anyone who enters the circle (with a posted YIELD sign) should not be doing over 15 MPH to properly manuever the circle. Anyone approaching the circuit should SEE and OBEY the posted YIELD signs if a pedestrian is in the circle. At any crosswalk, pedestrians have the Right of Way, not the vehicles.
From my observations of driving Franlin Street, many vehicles are driving 35 MPH when they should be driving the posted 25 MPH. If drivers slowed down and yielded to pedestrians in the circle, there should not be any problems at these circles.
I think that Wake Forest Police should give this closer observation to monitor the problem and see if any further action is needed.
I will discuss with the street department about adding signs inside the roundabout as necessary. Many times Roundabouts are "oversigned" and confuse the drivers.
