The corner of Gilbert and Main Street has poor lighting by the sidewalk. If one is driving southbound on Main and taking the right onto Gilbert, it is impossible to see if there are any southbound pedestrians attempting to cross the street.
A street light needs to be added at the corner. Making the problem worse is that there is a large tree on that corner that obstructs the view. I don't like the idea of cutting down a tree, adding street light seems to be the better option.
I'm sorry that it has been taking so long to get a fix for this problem. Part of the problem is that no watchers from the town of Ridgefield had been notified about the issue. The Ridgefield Highway Dept. is now a public watcher, so they were notified today. Are there any other departments that ought to be notified about this issue?
Oh, wow! Thank you Zak. I just thought that I'd close the issue since the problem is not one of the bigger issues in town. I'm always so tentative when I make that turn. I don't know if any other department would need to be notified, the highway dept. is probably the only one.
Thank you once again.
Barbara
The lighting is not the core problem. You simply need to slow down to a proper speed before you make the turn. As a jogger (and Main Street Resident), I find that many drivers completely ignore the fact that there are people on the sidewalks, regardless of how good the lighting is. Cars drive way too fast between the blinking light and Gilbert Street. More police traps would help in this section of Main Street.
Your comment implies that I am driving too fast? I can tell you for a fact that I am not. I've been running for 33 years so I know first hand about people driving way too fast. I can tell you for a fact that it IS the lighting. When making the right turn onto Gilbert, I drive approximately 5 mph to 10 mph. The only thing that helps me is if I turn on my high beams when making the turn so that I can see the darkened area of the sidewalk. Of course, this is not always feasible.
I know first hand that runners see cars better than drivers see runners, so I am particularly careful when driving and running.
Whiteda6 - I completely share your sentiments about speeding on Main and other streets. It's a huge problem. I've had people tailgate me when I drive the speed limit (how selfish of me). But I think the problem on Main and Gilbert has to do with a large tree that may be blocking some light from hitting the sidewalk at the intersection.

I hope we can get a response from the town soon.
