I agree that these cross walks are problematic. I'm a driver, and I look for people in the crosswalks and stop to let them cross (often much to the chagrin of the people behind me). However, I will also say that the parking on the street makes it very difficult to see if people are there until you are almost upon them, and at night, the lighting is extremely bad. Additionally, the quantity of night bicylists who do not use lights is alarming, particularly as the road narrows... it can be a rather harrowing drive to the highway.
