This needs to be addressed. We have repeatedly been told we would see more Alpharetta officers monitoring this area. Yet it has been crickets here. This is now a RESIDENTIAL AREA. From our poor neighbors pet to a human, how long before you begin to pay attention and monitor this area?

Oh, you didn’t know this was the downtown Alpharetta drag strip. This has been previously submitted many times with zero action. Perhaps less time patrolling the “no turn on red” at Roswell St & Milton Ave and more on speed that kills.

I don’t understand what we need to do to fix this!!?? Can we not have flashing speed signs like on Marietta Street? and further down on Hopewell?? Is it a cost issue here? There is on-street parking on both sides making it so dangerous getting in and out of the car. There are families with small children walking and crossing the street. THIS IS A RESIDENTIAL AREA-FIX IT!

We forwarded this to Public Safety and requested an increase in patrol for this area. Additionally, we'll install electronic speed detection signs on Canton Street for traffic calming purposes.

Please address for trafficking going both directions as it’s not just inbound….. I noticed the speed limit sign inbound is 25mph and 30mph outbound….. both at 25mph makes more sense.

The city and the police department do not care. I live in a neighborhood and I never see the police, and when they VERY RARELY come through, they only drive down one street at a high rate of speed and get out of the neighborhood. We wish they would patrol more, but they don’t care. The city is only worried about revenue and building more and more, and destroying green space.

Just so you know, the flashing speed signs do nothing to change the speed. We live near the one on Marietta and it does nothing to slow speed. Also, it doesn't collect the data for traffic study to show how fast the traffic is going.

When will the newly installed speed monitor signs be activated? Just yesterday a bicyclist was nearly hit in front of our home on canton as a car passed him so fast on the wrong side of the road.

There are 25 homes that front Canton Street between this northbound sign and Mayfield road. I would recommend that it be posted 25MPH going BOTH DIRECTIONS.....

Speed detection signs on Canton Street are operational. Speed limits can not be changed (and enforced) without approvals from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). It is always recommended to implement traffic calming measures such as speed detection signs, in order to encourage lower driving speeds, before changing speed limits.

The signs are operational and we on Canton St greatly appreciate them. Two weeks ago there were 2 motorcycle officers who greatly helped by issuing warnings & citations. Doing this on a regular basis and not depending on flashing lights is what is needed.

Case closed?! While the speeding monitoring signs are appreciated, they do nothing to reduce or END the excessive speeding on this part of Canton Street. The city of Alpharetta needs to address this directly with GDOT to get the speed limit changed and enforceable. This is not the responsibility of us residents to end excessive speeding that endangers live and diminishes quality of life here in DT. Please.

As I previously stated, I personally walked down the street and counted the homes / townhomes that front Canton Street. This street has totally evolved since 2014 and the need to reduce the speed to 25mph in both directions between Mayfield and Old Milton avenue. As the previous reply stated, WHY? Is this stretch GDOT controlled and the city of Alpharetta unwilling to clean this issue up at the request of those living here in the garden district. Let’s STEP UP as a prosperous new downtown area and fix this for once and for all…..

The city does not care. It’s all about money. The police will not even respond at all or so delayed that they get there once everything is said and done. Can’t believe that nobody ran against the city leadership during this last election. Very interesting.

Before changing speed limits, we collect current speed data. Traffic guidelines state “When a speed limit within a speed zone is posted, it should be within 5 MPH of the 85th percentile speed of free-flowing traffic.” 85th percentile speed is the speed at or below which 85 percent of the drivers travel on a road segment. Speed limit signs have not been shown to change drivers’ behavior. Posted speed limits that deviate from the 85th percentile speed, either higher or lower, result in an increase in crashes. GDOT recommended the City to implement traffic calming measures as a means to reduce vehicle speed. Multiple traffic calming measures have been implemented on Canton Street such as crosswalks, on-street parking spaces, and electronic speed detection and warning signs.
We’ll collect speed data in a few months to evaluate if the 85th percentile speed is reduced so we can submit a request to GDOT to approve speed limit reduction.

Thank you for this information and your attention. However, all the traffic calming measures mentioned seem to work between Milton Avenue and Church Street on Canton Street. The complaint refers to Canton Street BETWEEN Lily Garden and Mayfield Road, where there are NO calming traffic measures. The speed detection sign at Lily Garden does nothing to slow traffic heading toward Mayfield Road, where the excessive speeding picks up tremendously. It is almost impossible to turn onto Canton Street from Lily Garden safely. And the noise we hear from excessive speeding while inside our homes is distressing. We need a stop sign period. It is obvious that the current implementation is not working as just this week there were two more serious wrecks between Lilly Garden & Mayfield. You continue to ask us to call and we do. We continue to ask for extra patrols and they do not come. You continue to say this has been acknowledged and that is not enough.

Maybe the city needs new leadership everywhere. Not sure why no one challenged the current leadership this past November.
