Property tagged – 10 days to comply

Sort of gets one thinking of "Groundhog Day," right Dear Respondent? I've chimed in several times before with responses on this issue. Time has passed, city festivals are over (so staff isn't spread especially thin), & yet we're still looking at a largely-unchanged picture at 2145, morning wake-up after wake-up, the same old same old. Except we're not getting paid like Bill Murray, & there's nothing funny about this. It's despicable, & I applaud you, Respondent, for riding tough on this!

The police completed their role for now: the truck that was rotting on the alley apron was removed. And a 10-day notice to act on the property upkeep has been given to the tenants to give to the absentee owner. (1 of the male trio, the youngest, has moved out)

We should probably expect for the other 2 of the family to flee, too, as I know that they didn't really anticipate putting down their addictive substances & picking up garden tools in order to rent-to-own. 10 days & counting.

On my checklist, I'm still looking at the county issue of the 2145 owner merely pretending to live at the address for years while collecting the related homeowner deductions illegally. I have reported such twice - in detail - to the correct county office, but have no way of monitoring their progress. (Isn't knowing but doing nothing a form of abetting?) To start, it would mean having a county inspector visit 2145. If they are using the same GPS software as the city inspectors, well, heck: now ALL of them are somewhere in Timbuktu nosing 'round neighborhoods, cuz they sure ain't on Davis Avenue. (Excepting the current delivery of a 10-day city notice. Sorry, no points due to time elapsed. We've been at the 2145 issue for years now.) Also on my aging list, & associated with 2145's mess, is the backyard of 2149 Davis, a rental next door. That weed/vine overgrowth goes up its north garage face, & continues under & over 2145's fence. I know not what's keeping 2149's owner (a once-rumored Hammond mayoral candidate, a political crony of sorts, an HFD employee, a business owner, & an owner of multiple Robertsdale properties) so distracted that he doesn't see 2149's faults. HE, actually, should look at 2145 & become enraged, as 2145's lowering the value & rental marketability of his 2149!

I'll bide my time listening to Sonny & Cher with fingers crossed..

City employee and owner of 2149 Davis bought 2 lots in the new housing down the street. First off all, i pray he's not planning on building on both and renting one cause i thought that was not allowed. Also, he'll have to look at his property at 2149 Davis every day. Maybe that will get him to do something about the unkempt property. This area used to be nice, but when you get people purchasing property for the sole reason of renting, you can be assured it won't turn out well. I will be a thorn in the side of the city. When people turn a blind eye is when things go down hill. I'm surprised more people don't complain.

Also, not only does said Hammond employee own rental at 2149 Davis, he also owns 2 other homes (rentals) on the block - 2104 Davis and 2144 Davis. So the downfall of the neighborhood can largely be attributed to that one employee. I own one piece of property and it is enough to keep me busy. This is how areas become dilapidated. When you have someone purchase property for the sole purpose of collecting rent and have no desire to keep said property up this is what happens - ie: slum landlord.

A lot if people subscribe to the adage that, "You can't fight city hall." I'm nursing my bruises, but I'm still not letting them write me off, and, obviously neither are you! To answer your question, many people are streaming, texting, or watching epic shows featuring dancing or survival in horrendous, unedited jungle conditions, not that any of them have studied the Korean War or the Vietnam conflict, enabling them to laugh at the network idiocy. But those same patriots proudly put our current President in office, & will BLINDLY vote yes to the coming election referendum on a tax INCREASE to support education - in part, tossing a few MORE bucks to Hammond Central to help keep good teachers & to attract new applicants. Those blind mice have no time to take issue with the poor upkeep of neighboring properties, for Pete's sake. And, ever the entrepreneur, if 2149's Mr. G eventually looks down from 1 of his castles in the new development, & they will ALL be looking down on the fringe properties, he'll pay no mind to distressed neighbors. Cabrini Green sat in the shadows of skyscrapers for eons. (Hey, I thought the new development was proceeding on a lottery basis! Mr. G's sure one lucky s-o-b to have garnered not 1 but 2 tickets - & both of them WINNERS! See, miracles DO happen!) Anyway, he'll likely still be too busy to care about 2149.

Notice also, Mr G’s assessed valuations, including ‘eff yr’ and ‘eff age’ are quite a bit less than properties owned on the same block. A little advantage of being an employee? Wink, wink…
