These tracks were painted with orange marking paint today to help warn bicyclists and hopefully avoid more crashes until the issue can be addressed.

This looks like it forces cyclists to veer to the left - into the car lane - to avoid this hazard: "damned if you do; damned if you don't" Please fix this dangerous issue, it has the potential for causing a terrible tragedy! (I don't even ride a bike!) :-o

Someone put some cones out on the sidewalk, but the pavement issue has definitely not yet been addressed. Reopening until the issue is fixed.

When was the last time that these tracks were used. Will they ever be used again??? if not cut them out and patch the road.

David, the tracks are completely abandoned, but track removal is very expensive and neither the city nor the train company want to take responsibility for it. I'm not excusing the issue, but that's the main reason why these and so many other abandoned tracks around the city have yet to be removed, even though the Oakland Municipal Code mandates it. If someone is hurt or killed due to these tracks the city will definitely be sued for millions, since it is a known issue.

So the city ignores there own laws muni-code 12.28.090 Tracks-Abandonment-Repaving. But they spend millions on the homeless shuffle and picking up illegal dumping. Yet they are to spineless to go after the deep pocket railroads over all of these heath and safety issues for the public. As a tax payer I am way passed @#$% off.

I called UP to put them on notice -- they have a "Reporting Rough or Damaged Grade Crossings" number (http://www.up.com/aboutup/contact/) and I left message indicating this is a dangerous crossing, gave crossing location info and the URL to this page, and letting them know Oakland is saying it is UP's responsibility.

Tom Savage at Union Pacific called me back, says it is in their contractor's queue, the expect a fix for this in January or February sometime.

Did they mention what year they planned to come out. This unfortunately is a valid question to ask.

The City of Oakland has a history of closing issues that they have referred or do not want to deal with. The odds that Union Pacific was contacted by PWD is zero to none. This is a public street and a major hazard. So it is still a PWD problem to take care of. PWD time to deal with it.

An asphalt patch was recently added here along the bike lane and sidewalk. It's not a complete/permanent fix, but it's definitely an improvement.

I would now consider this closed, although SCF is not giving that to me as an option; maybe someone in OPW can do so. It would have been nice if UP could have gone a few more inches to cover the whole bike lane and perhaps into the road -- the tracks in the road would still flatten a bike tire -- but 90% of the bike lane is safe; it's a decent job and no longer a critical issue. Respect to UP for getting it done.
