Description

Just heard about another accident at this intersection...

(from neighbors email)
"We just had ANOTHER accident at Ordway and 17th with injuries. Not nearly as bad as the guy on the motorcycle a few months ago, but the driver side door was hit and this poor old man is trapped in his car screaming for help. SERIOUSLY, what is it going to take!?!?"

Corby had mentioned 4 months ago that he would start with painting white lines on Ordway at the interestection, but nothing has been done.

The city is not dealing with this issue in a timely manner. We need voices to make it a priority.

I can't believe this is STILL an issue! How many accidents have to happen before the city takes notice? Are they waiting for a fatal accident? This is completely negligent. Please call and help us get this fixed!!!

Unbelievable. It's great that we have such kind neighbors that regularly respond to the 17th/Ordway accidents, but wouldn't it be even better if we could avoid the accidents in the first place??? A fatality should not be the impetus for making the intersection a 4 way stop.

This should be simple. Aren't we just talking about adding TWO stop signs? A five second Google search takes us to stopsignxpress.com where stop signs run from $34-$119. I bet all the crash victims to date will pitch in a buck or two if the City can't get it done. Maybe we can dig our own holes and put 'em up ourselves.

The stop signs do cost Metro a bit more than $100/each (they also have to install "Stop Ahead" signs and/or other alerts like 150 ft ahead of the new signs) but I completely agree we all need to fix this intersection. We worked with our council member and Public Works to install the three-way stop at Porter and Eastland. It required several meetings but with the council members' support, we succeeded. Have you sent a message to Councilman Westerholm?

I know one of the neighbors at least has emailed Peter Westerholm since the latest accident.
Did you set up meetings with your council member or as a group of neighbors initially? Any advice on making a case for something to be done, getting the ball rolling?

Are the people on Ordway, wanting to cross 17 th, not stopping and looking in BOTH directions before proceeding? Is this the problem?? Drivers not stopping and just skimming across 17th and hoping to make it before being hit?

Pw-tn, I live on the corner of 17th and ordway, I have witnessed several of the accidents over the years. To answer your question, yes in some cases the vehicle crossing over 17th just creeps through. I think the problem is that even after a complete stop you have to ease out to be able to have a clear view, cars park along 17th making it tricky to see clear. In most cases the cars involved say " I didn't even see them coming" . This is a very tricky intersect, with an impeded view, cars traveling too fast on 17th you have to use extreme caution. Interestingly, there is a sign posted on 17th that shows 10 mph. Most people don't know its there.
