The lights that are activated by the person crossing are needed in a few spots on alt 19 it's dangerous for those using the trail and coming from the east

I agree completely. We are a Family in Palm Harbor that often need to cross at Palm Harbor Blvd. and Florida road. I hope it doesn't take a tragedy to move this issue forward!

We (the Downtown Merchants) have been asking for a traffic light at Florida Avenue and Nebraska Ave for years... FDOT says the traffic warrant doesn't putting one there or at Nebraska... when they did the streetscape downtown, there was money from the former Congressman Bill Young to pay for the traffic light ($450,000)... the County never pursued FDOT to get approval for a light... so I don't know what happened to that money... now we are hearing they are considering a ROUNDABOUT!!!! So, it's very important that we put the pressure on the County Commission to resolve this PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUE!!! The "Harbor" in Palm Harbor is Pop Stansell Park and we need a SAFE way to allow pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders, and cars etc. to get from one side of Alt 19 to the other. The Pinellas Trail is there as well as the Ballparks and children's playground. I am scared to death when I see a person in a wheelchair trying to cross the road. Perhaps we need to get an ADA lawyer involved and sue the County over this cause there is not even a lined crosswalk! I have personally met with each of the County Commissioners and even walked most of them down to this intersection to show them how dangerous it is in 2014/2015 and nothing has happened, yet. I hope someone doesn't have to DIE at this intersection to finally get something done!!! Come on, people!!!!

I completely agree. Also there are retired residents and tourists in the mobile home parks trying to cross. A19 has become a very fast road.

I don not understand why this issue is listed as "Closed." This hazard still exists so it is not "closed" to those of us that live in the area.

Pinellas Communications - Stop passing the buck by telling us to contact FL DoT. We pay taxes to support the county government and County Commissioners are elected to represent us. I find it difficult to believe that Fl DoT is ignoring a request from the County to protect pedestrians.

Really? The County "cannot assist" by advocating to FDOT on behalf of its citizens regarding a safety issue on a highway in an unincorporated area of the County.

Florida has 20 million people, but only 67 counties. Seems Pinelass County, the sixth largest in the State, would have more influence on FDOT than 50 or 60 concerned citizen calls.

FYI: Local FDOT office passes the buck (just like @ Pinelllas County) and refers you to the District Office in Tampa 813-975-6000. The District Office said they will review the request... They also said they do work with Pinellas County on these types of issues but had not received any requests or complaints from the County.

@ Pinellas Communications Rather than worrying about keeping the site clean, how about actually addressing the issue and contacting FDOT and help us keep pedestrians and bicyclist safe in unincorporated Palm Harbor?

I agree, this has not been resolved and instead of passing it off to someone else, perhaps someone needs to address the issue. Obviously there is a concern and as tax paying citizens, I believe it needs to be addressed.

UPDATE: Florida Department of Transportation are studying that area for safety improvements and working with the County on a solution. Thank you for your patience and as soon as we have more information you will be notified.

I just drove on Alt 19 today by Florida Avenue and witnessed a man in a wheelchair making a mad dash across the Alt 19 where there aren't even any crosswalk lines on the road! Scary.

In a conference call with FDOT this morning, we were informed that DOT is postponing the August 31st meeting in Downtown Palm Harbor due to the uncertainty of weather due to Hurricane Erika. DOT will be issuing a press release about the postponement and Public Works is modifying the portable message boards about the postponement. These boards have been installed on the roads around Downtown Palm Harbor. I will be contacting Com Eggers to coordinate with his schedule on a new date for the meeting. DOT is coordinating with Senator Latvala’s office on his availability. We are looking at sometime between September 14 and October 1.

UPDATE: The Palm Harbor Workshop has been officially rescheduled for Tuesday September 29th at the same time: 6:30p to 8:30P and same location: Harbor Hall 1190 Georgia Ave, Palm Harbor, FL 34683.

A round-a-bout on Alt. 19, seriously ... didn't we learn anything from Clearwater Beach ?

You guys complaining are not technically in Pinellas County, you need to be going after FDOT, they are the ones screwing you and county officails are powerless. Welcome to local Government.

I am definitely in Pinellas County and strongly believe the County has some ownership of this safety issue as the crossroad (Florida) in question in maintained by the County. I have also voiced my concerns over this intersection to FDOT.

FDOT states the traffic count at Florida and Alt 19 is not sufficient for a traffic light but it is sufficient for a round-a-bout. They also claim the cost between a traffic light and round-a-bout are comparable. Both of these statements seem questionable but I am not a traffic engineer. It would be nice if the County would step up and assist the Palm Harbor community.

What is the update on this?

So, its been 2 months since I asked what the status on this was. I have not heard anything since the 2nd meeting at PHU.Last week on the way to school a student (someones child) was hit by a car and thankfully not killed! Will it take someone being killed to get anyone to do something about this???

It will take more than someone getting killed. It will take someone getting killed close to a county election cycle and media interest. Otherwise, Palm Harbor is not on the radar.

The next Palm Harbor town hall meeting with District 4 County Commissioner Dave Eggers is coming up Monday, May 9th, 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Palm Harbor Library. Every Palm Harbor resident is invited; bring your questions. This is the perfect venue to attend and bring this up to Commissioner Eggers in light of the recent accident at Delaware & Alt. 19, and to get updated by the county on the traffic signal/roundabout issue.

Thank you Jeannine! We just moved to the area and are interested in this issue. My husband called Mr. Eggers office yesterday, let us know if you have any other suggestions on who to contact. This needs to be resolved before there is a tragic accident!

District Traffic Services Program Engineer. I am not sure this fully addresses the issue. We are under contract to buy a home adjacent to Pop Stansel Park. There are 19 new home sites being added. With the traffic flow/speed only slightly interrupted by the ped crossing, it still seems very dangerous/difficult for cars to get in and out of the park area. A boy was hit using the cross walk at Delaware going to school/ I would like more urgency/concern on the part of the folks in power to address the issue for the safety of so many in the area. Who do we appeal to?

Still nothing has been done about this, where is DOT on this...anyone have any contacts to get some answers

Remember - just because the county "acknowledges" an issue doesn't mean they will act. My experience has been that the public can submit as many complaints as they wish concerning any issue but after a certain amount of time the county will arbitrarily close the complaint. They just shut it down. On a few rare occasions, if enough taxpayers contact their county represemtatives something may get done. BTW, the county administrator and public works officials will simply ignore any communications.

deebie47 at least 3 1/2 yrs but from what I understand the business owners had been complaining for YEARS prior.

So, after reading this thread from FOUR YEARS ago, I am so disappointed in the lack of action on either a traffic light OR a roundabout. Although the crosswalks have been installed with flashing lights, I still witness cars flying up and down Alt 19 in both directions. Also there are so many cars coming at once if you try to make a left hand turn, you have to get in the middle lane (technically a turning lane) and ease out when there is a small gap. Also turning into The Villas of San Marino, it is a skill of precision to get to turn (sometimes quickly due to multiple cars speeding) to then stop and look again for bikers and pedestrians. I'm pretty good at watching out for them, but when so many cars are speeding it makes it difficult. I also see there is a Open House at PHUHS on November 4th, 2019. They specifically state it is NOT a "formal" meeting but an open forum basically. So this means there most likely would not be an opportunity to SPEAK as a concerned citizen of Palm Harbor. Unfortunately I will be out of town that evening, but look to hear what the next steps are.
