Reckless driving is prolific in this area. The residents of Stevens Road circulated a petition last fall and successfully lowered our speed limit to 25mph. However, this has resulted in little or no improvement in reckless speeding. Cars are often observed going more than 20mph over the posted limit. The concentration of pedestrians, both from Enloe and the community, and the lack of sidewalks make this an immediate threat to public safety.

Please take this as an opportunity to enforce the posted speed limits throughout the Longview Park and Longview Gardens area (north and south of Enloe). We may not be so lucky that only landscaping and signage is the casualty of this bad behavior next time.

I am very concerned for pedestrians in this area. I often feel unsafe while walking my dog.

Glad the damage wasn't to mammals, but I sure hate to see the beautiful old crepe myrtles affected.

I just don't believe that enforcement works, because there is no way the police can be everywhere at once. Signs clearly don't work. What would it take to get speed bumps? I have to believe that putting speed bumps on roads near a high school has been done before. If we need to raise money as a community, fine, just give us an amount. I can't see any other way to make real progress on this issue.

I will refer this to Capt. Lull at the Southeast Police District. When he's had a chance to check this area out I will update this issue.

Capt. Lull has forwarded the concern to all the officers in the Southeast District as well as to the School Resource Officer for Enloe and his sergeant as well. Unfortunately, whenever you have young drivers concentrated in an area such as a high school, there are going to be some examples of “irresponsible driving”. This is an unfortunate reality around every high school in the City. Our officers will keep an eye out on it though. Southeast District officers have been very involved at Enloe for a variety of reasons. I don’t know that we’ll have a specific resolution for this specific location but we will keep it on the radar. Traffic calming (speed bumps, etc.) in the City is accomplished by petitioning through the Public Works Department. A priority list has been developed based on specific criteria. Depending on the score this street receives it will be placed on the priority list, but it's important to note that the number of neighborhoods requesting traffic calming far exceeds the resources available to implement, so it may be some time even if you are reasonably high on the priority list. Good news...one of our officers responded to this crash and arrived on scene within three minutes. The driver ran from the scene and the officer was able to locate him a couple of hours later and charged him. We have reported the damaged street sign to the Street Maintenance division, and contacted our Urban Forestry division regarding the damaged tree.
