Description
Dear Colleagues,
I want to bring a serious safety issue to your attention. The Harrison Greenway (Part of The Loop) includes an at-grade crossing of East Irvington Road (Photo). When the pedestrian crossing signal indicates ‘safe to cross’, the right turn traffic signal turns from red to a flashing yellow arrow. Motorists waiting to make the right turn, see the flashing yellow right turn arrow and simply proceed. Too frequently the motorists neither look nor yield for pedestrians and bicyclists. Five weeks ago a friend crossing the intersection, with the crossing signal, was struck and seriously injured by a vehicle making a right turn.
Please consider increasing the safety of the pedestrians and bicyclists by making the right turn signal remain ‘Red’ while the pedestrian crossing signal is illuminated, and, adding a “No Right Turn on Red” sign. The current “Yield to Bicyclists” sign is too often ignored.
I have a short video of the issues at this intersection and am happy to share it with you. Let me know how I can post it to you (text message, email, thumbdrive).
I would appreciate speaking briefly with you, phone or in person, about this serious issue and prevent anyone else from being injured, or worse, at this pedestrian crossing.
